Fox Suru BUYER BEWARE...

Well, just got home and got the knife. What a P.O.S.

I did get it used, off of ebay.
...

that was the real mistake, personally, I wouldn't blame fox or the country of origin because you got a bad used one from ebay
but I hope the return process works, please report back

(personally, I don't use ebay or the 'river' site)

I hear what you are saying. And I was hesitant to buy it off of eBay. I also fail to see how the previous user could have made it lock up earlier.

that can happen if they took it apart and failed to adjust it properly when re-assembling...
(edited to add: sometimes it is indeed the factory fault for early lockup)

Thanks for posting the update. The box mine came in had tons of bill boarding about being named "knife of the year". Dont believe the hype...

Very unlikely it was the prior owner. You can't just bend CF to adjust the lock tension...

Buying this knife on eBay isn't the reason why coltc11's knife is garbage. It's garbage because Fox Knives made it and they seem to have legendarily spotty QC.

It wouldn't. That's just the sort of conclusion people jump to when you buy a knife off amazon or ebay and it has problems.

"Prior owner must have damaged it" or "It must be a fake", not "The knife was made poorly".

I honestly can't believe what a POS this thing is. I'll never buy another Fox Knife again. I'll skip Italy all together for now on.

As far as the Roughness of the CF, well it's a mixed bag. I own 5 CF knives, and the two peel ply g-10 ones are much tougher. I don't have much experience with Italian knives, but Lionsteel did right by me when I owned one.

Bad batches happen, but QC should catch stuff like early lockup. Sometimes when it's a new to market product, there are still kinks to be worked out.

I generally dislike the CF G-10 laminate. My Spyderco Ikuchi was like sandpaper.

Glad it worked out for you though with the mods.

As long as we’re sharing anecdotes, I’ll add my data to the pool.

I’ve only had two Italian-manufactured blades; Spyderco Lionspy and Bastinelli Big Dragotac. Both were perfect.

the screws for the pocket clip are threading into the CF or are there steel liners for them?

urbanedcsupply doesn't even sell the all CF version to begin with. hopefully the solid titanium scales come back in stock. should be superior to a Techno 2 imho

ive been studying the Suru situation.. here it goes correct me if I'm wrong:
1. all non-urbanedcsupply (non-UES) variants look like swiss cheese ("cheesy") on either side, without exception. Suru is sold all over the world and they are all cheesy.
2. if you want one (or either) side to be solid, the only place to serve is UES. but your desired variant might be outofstock there.
3. for all non-UES variants (see big importers catalog) the prices in Europe are much lower than in US, e.g. the all CF cheesy can be had for 170€ shipped, the aluminum cheesy for 100€.
4. EU distributers and retailers also carry the new variant with mixed handles ( CF presentation side and Ti lock side ) but with both sides being cheesy anyway. price is 210€ .
5. the UES price for solid mixed handles is at least 299$ , currently 12pcs of copper shredded CF\Ti are in stock. prices of the outofstock items are not shown
6. I'll try to find out which solid variants UES is planning to restock. i am interested in solid scales. their cheesy Ti variant doesn't seem to sell well (44pcs in stock).
7. on Instagram there are more solid Suru's than cheesy Suru's
8. given the desired Suru, it ticks more boxes than Techno, Techno 2, Pilar Ti, GiantMouse, Ace Biblio Ti, and whatnot Voxnaes. imho.
9. the copper shredded CF seems to have a smooth finish
10. it is questionable if Fox Italia factory will release solid scale variants outside of UES. if they did, the EU price would be around 210€ too, i.e. much cheaper for EU shoppers.

There were more/other variants on crowdfunding platforms (Drop.com, …) which i didn't care to list here too. So it's interesting to learn that 5 vendors released their own exclusives (UrbanEDC, WilsonCombat, KnifeCenter, Heinnie, Drop), with moderate success i guess. Similar models are Fox Baby Core (Techno2 inspired?), Fox Yaru, both slightly bigger/heavier, and GiantMouse ACE Riv (3 variants, in Elmax).

Maybe we can all agree that any model with FULL scales looks classier than with CHEESY scales. It is hard to imagine that anyone would prefer the CHEESY to the FULL, if one had the choice at the same price. For the weight reduction maybe? 58g feels too light-weight for a 250$ knife imho and at that price point you better get a timelessly nice-looking unit! However the original standard/catalog Suru issue by the Fox Italia factory is with 2 CHEESY scales (2x CF, or mixed CF+Ti, or 2x Aluminum) wth.

Anyway imho the most desirable variants are nos. #1-#5, as long as the quoted weight specs are true. Let's find out if and when those will be all back in stock, thanks! If those don't get restocked anytime soon, then i'd say that #5 is currently the most desirable left in stock, what do you think? o_O

I don't either. But if I can make it perfect I will. It’s part of the hobby. Make it better than it left the factory. Make it your own. Make it your vision of what it should be.
I agree with making it your own. Pimping factory knives is something I love to do. But if fit and finish were that bad out of the box, I would have sent it back, especially at that price. Then again, who hasn't taken an Emerson apart to clean the grit out of the pivot of a brand new Emerson.
It seems like you did a little more work than was necessary given what you paid for it.

bearing
9.66-9.68mm outer diameter
5.28-5.30mm inner diameter

pivot
5.00mm diameter

groove
10.00mm outer diameter
5.01mm inner diameter

=> replacement washer should be around, custom size:
10.0 x 5.0 x 1.00mm out of phosphor-bronze, brass, or teflon
=> maybe this could do the trick, standard fare:
DIN 125 Form A, 5.3 x 10.0 x 1.0mm, for M5 screws (teflon 1.02€/pc, brass 0.12€/pc, 5.00€ shipping)
