Foxy folly design origin

Wonderfull pictures. Tipped me over the edge. I'll soon have Nepalese military kukri to compare to my H.I.'s. You folks are a really, really bad influence. So back to topic, are dui chirra style blades necessarily of an older design? It seems that the use of fullers would be to optimize stiffness and reduce weight for the, shall we say, more singular purpose built kukri. The dui chirra style has to be some of the most beautiful blades ever.

Berkley:

Thanks for the explanation and the new, expandable picture. That's a great collection.

Apologies to you Berkley I attributed your very good group picture to the moderator at: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=600940&page=5. Got that mixed up, sorry. May I add your collection IS superb. My favorite Kukri of your collection there is the 618 gram Nepalese military "Bhojpure" kukri from Lagan Silekhana (last one in the 3rd row). Not very exotic of me but the weight and efficient design of that Bhojpure is very nice.

Hey Berk, I think I misunderstood your post. I just read it again and I think this is your Foxy Folly but it was sharpened by Steve. I just remembered he expertly sharpens knives for only the nicest people :).

i've had a range of foxies:

length/weight-in-ounces

17/27, 17.5/24, 17.5/26, 17.5/26, 20.5/47, 21/20

note the one at 47...

nice

one of the fighter models is VERY thin. VERY VERY VERY thing. rings like a bell.

i generally prefer the models at 17.5 or so in length, and around 26 ounces. good choppers.

VERY leafy :)

That is some range. I guest there is no standard length or weight for the Foxy Folly, depends on the Kami making it. Bladite you have a great collection there. I admit to being envious of you :grumpy:. I will say 20 Hail Mary's for pentenance.

Dui Chira.jpg
The HI Dui Chirra above is based on a mold made from a 19th-century khukuri owned by HI forumite 'Berkeley'.
Dui Chirra (double fullered) Kukris are so nice. Both art and function in one. I saw one Dui Chirra the other day for sale that had a 32cm long blade with a 6cm belly depth, and a weight of around 600 grams. That's more my style.

the fighter and the beast foxies are examples of the kamis trying to figure out exactly what we wanted. short handles, long handles, weight, all that.

then i believe it was Bura who got "perfection" and there was screaming "yes, this, this, make more like THIS". okay then.

sometimes, as with the Bonecutter, exact specs are literally contracted for, and voila. you get what you asked for. then, uh, the kamis get ... inspired and make changes. sometimes, change is not good ;) then you get WEIRD stuff. oh yes. i keep hoping for "the one true bonecutter" to appear again, snap up a few, test them, and hold them for the zombies.

sometimes you get confusion on your specs, and thus is born a NEW knife: like the Super CAK - oft imitated, not oft equalled. that was a lovely lovely knife. apparently too lovely for me to keep ;)

Great explanation. You have brought order to chaos. I saw the original and was trying to figure out how some HI designs were close to that original and others were far removed. As you can tell from my Dui Chirra preferred specs. I am more of a traditionalist. But that's just me and my use for the magnificently cool Khukuri.

Actually, when I was about 20 years old I hated the Kukri because I did not believe the courageous stories of it in war. The cutting off heads in one blow or the single Gurkha killing Japanese officer's armed with Guntos. But now I have studied history and know by design and the skill of the untouchables (Kamis) the Kukri is one of the best. Also, the Gurkha is one of the top fighters in the World. These two factors make history together.

The traditional Khukuri is my farovite big knife today and I think it's your favorite too.

oh, i forgot i had a picture?
