thanx to the kindness [1] of the USPS my foxy folly from the 2/25 DOTD:
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=405136

it was advertised as a blem with a handle crack needing epoxy, that's okay, i can deal with handles :) took it out for a light spin with my earlier bought 18 inch 30 ounce BDC (full price 10/10 deal) since i've never used it. both knives arrived REALLY REALLY sharp - hair popping! time to take out the "fuller brothers"...

since one of my goals was to lightly stress the foxy handle, to make sure the crack was done growing, so that my fix would be quite permanent, i found some soft pine and poplar like stuff.

the BDS was having a sharp old time. the handle is a good fit for my hand, but i'm used to having rings now :) and i wiggled a little more than i would like - resulting in a small blister. woops.

the foxy did well too, singing along, taking out good sized bits until after 2-3 good whacks near the center of my sample (about 3 inches thick), something didn't sound right... uhm, crap. the edge folded in two places at the sweet spot area. urk. would've hated to start on oak :(

so, i don't think that's going to buff out :( in looking at that area carefully, i'm noting an "anti temper line" that's about 3 inches with the two fold overs centered in it. dunno, at least a 1/4 to 1/3 inch deep. the rest of the edge seems to ring pretty well, but that part sounds a bit more dull/dead. maybe the tea pot missed. dang. foxy folly failure, fickle fate frolic.

so, bummer, i'm quite distraught - such a pretty blade otherwise. i'll point yangdu at this later.

[1] that's a joke :> they took FIVE miserable days instead of two, i know, i know, the holidays, but they almost lost it anyway when they dropped it off.

Right there shows the value of really testing the blades out. People go out make two or three chops and that's it. That's ok if you are just gonna collect them but if you want to use them best to test them on the toughest stuff right off.

Two of the ones I had that rolled like that did it on really hard pine near the center.

My 15" Ganga Ram Villager made it almost a whole year before I cut an oak, and bent it. I should have tested it first off on the hardest stuff. The replacement Yangdu sent me was tested on oak- and passed great:thumbup:

Bladite, do you have a file to test the hardness of the edge with? That one section of the blade may have some softer metal on the surface from the polishing process. You might want to try straightening the folds, sharpening it once or twice and testing the edge on the pine again.

i have various sharpening handtools, including a fairly standard bastard/rat? file... kinda course though. nothing as a "reference" file.

the look of that area of the edge definitely has a non temper line as a said, the blade edge on either side seems quite hard.

as for straightening it, i have no idea how - i'm not set up for heating/forging - there's a significant curl, and potentially at least 1/4 inch of material would be affected - ie: soft and would have to be removed; in order for the entire edge to be proper, i'd need a belt grinder and a lot of grinding skill, and that would overall result in a lot of metal being taken out.

Bladite,
BUmmer to hear about your FF going astray...The next khuk I buy (20" AK) is gonna get the oak test...

My 15" Ak is for more personal settings and worked really well on a hog leg as test media...AHHH having a cousin that is a pig farmer...Comes in handy sometimes!!;)

And BEFORE I get blasted by peta, the hog was dead as a pan of fried chicken when I did the test...I did ask him if I could test a sword out on one going to the house, and he gave me a very dirty look...lol:D

that sucks... i have an ak by shere that rols like crazy on both sides of the sweet spot, but thats because the front section hits the log a lot, and the hardened area is farly small.

you can grind that out, but you'd need the equipment to do it... unless your capable of hand filing a new bevel in that area (though thats a pretty extreme amount of work)

That's too bad. Sometimes a bad one will get through. Yangdu will make it right.

Ahh..the beauty of dealing with Yangdu! This becomes nothing more than a "Shucks!" because you know she stands behind every blade (it's safer back there).

With the right gear...not a problem, but without such gear and *only* the HI promise...um...not a problem.

Let us know how the new one does when it arrives.

Sad news, but this is why its great at HI. Yangdu won't hesitate to replace it. Thanks for posting.

Send it back to HI for replacement.

Khukuri testing, as advocated by Uncle Bill, might have seemed a bit harsh, but he was very adamant that every new khukuri should be thoroughly tested. The kamis are wonderful craftsmen, but they're just men, and men ain't perfect, thank God.

aww, that's the thing, it's gorjus. the wood is amazing, the blade pleasing to the eye, everything i've been waiting for the chance to snag for a long time now... and aha! i got one. sending it back, even if to get one very similar... is sad making. bit more than shucks, but less than disaster i guess.

I wish consumer electronics carried such a warranty. Of course, if they did, I would not spend so much time smashing broken CD players and laptops with HI khukuris.

Life is funny like that. I think that Darwin would have approved.

Let us know how your next one does. I'm personally rather fond of the FF myself. I gifted my first one (the one that I chopped up the car with) to a shipmate on his way to Iraq but my second FF still hangs on "User Row."

i'm rather fond of them too - apparently a lot of people are - hard to get one's hands on. maybe next time i'm rich/fully-employed i can special order some... and a monster ycs and ... but for now, i take what the winds of DOTD and the sharkies let me.

and A CAR? good lord. really? hah. mine hit poplar and whoops. course, can't blame it, the entire sweet spot was like a well reinforced soupcan edge - sharp but not strong enough. hopefuly, next one can cut reinforced concrete and rebar.

Dave, I remember your CD player destruction video with a lot of fondness. I showed it to my family and they got quite a kick out of it.

Well, with as few defects as there appear to be, I fear for that trailer. :D
