Frame handle fixed blade???

Ok, what's the reason for making a fixed blade knife in this manner? I see no real advantage other than being able to add a furrel to what appears to be a full tang knife. It's not stronger than a full tang, the guard is no more secure than a hidden tang and I don't see where it saves material or weight. Just looks like more work & harder fit-n-finish. Just curious!!
