I'm looking for a frame or liner lock folder, with phosphor bronze washers, and no flipper thing. I really wanted to love my ZT 0200, but the detent was weak and the flipper made the blade open in my pocket. Budget is up to $300.

I was going to get a DPX HEST 2.0, but I read that they have Teflon washers. Then I was going to get the HEST 2 MilSpec, because they said that it has PB washers, but then read that it has PB and Teflon washers. Can anyone verify this?

I'm currently looking at a ZT 0550. I had one a while back and regret selling it. What else should I be looking at?

So:

<$300
No flipper
Frame/liner lock
PB washers.

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the 0550/1 use the KVT? Or is it just the 0560/1?

It is very easy to replace the washers if you really don't like teflon. I had a LionSteel SR-1 with teflon washers and they worked great, blade flew out like a rocket. Only reason I sold it was it was too large for EDC (I work in an office). According to DPX's website it has pb washers. However, I do know for a fact that LionSteel uses teflon, so I'm not sure about the DPx. I do have a HEAT/F OD green and I'll check right now to see if I can tell what it has.

Well the HEAT definitely has teflon washers.

The HEAT/F and most of the HEST/Fs (a 1.0 and several 1.5s and 2.0s) I've had used Teflon. The Milspec is the only one I've seen to use one Teflon and one PB, I have no idea why the difference.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

Spyderco Military
Spyderco Gayle Bradley

I have a Military, but I forgot about the Gayle Bradley.

ZT 0550
Benchmade 755
Used Umnumzaan
Spyderco Tuff

I just got a 755 MPR for $165 from an online retailer who was not following BM's pricing rules :D

I'll add the Tuff to the list, next to the 0550.

TAD Dauntless.

How does one go about getting these? I'm on TAD's mailing list, and remember seeing something about a "lottery", but they never seem to be in stock?

I didn't let Teflon washers stop me from buying a HEST 2.0. I'm glad I didn't. It's a great knife and smooth as can be.

Do other knives use the PB/Teflon combination like the HEST milspec?

TAD's come up on the exchange here from time to time. I can't say I've ever seen one for $300, more often it's $400-$500+

I agree with people on the 0550. I loved mine, but had to sell it to move on to bigger and betters.

If you don't need the knife right now, you should look into a pre-order for the 0620 as well. Either the regular or the CF version would be within your budget, and I think both are very promising.

550 fits the bill nicely!

Stay on TAD's mailing list. You'll know, days in advance, when they are having the next sale. You can order by phone. They sell out in one day.
Oh yeah, get a Sebenza; used is just fine as it lasts forever. Get a small or a large Sebbie depending on your hand size. The small has a grip less than four inches, no good for me.

You have a Military that meets your criteria. What other features do you want?

Spyderco Sage 1 and 2 fit the bill.

I just recently got a Mk3 (the most recent model) for $300, and there's one on there for $290. Older Marks go for less if you find them right.

To get one direct from TAD you gotta watch the mailing list and then wait until they are released at 10am pacific and nab one quick once they are. The lotteries are for the custom pieces.
