Framelock design critique

Well that's a bit of a shame, I'll be on the lookup for when you begin selling some stuff.

Thanks. Honestly I sell a few locally and that is about all I can keep up with right now. Maybe by the time I renew my membership I will have more time to fill more orders.

I finally bought a mill. I have been researching and I went with the harbor freight mini mill and bought the belt drive kit from little machine shop. I also bought the clamping kit, set of ti end mills, a 5/16" carbide ball end mill (for the relief in the liner), 123 blocks, collets, coolant hose, 3" milling vise, and a few 1/8" ball end mills.

I also bought 1/16" detent balls, 2-56 screws, some #50 and #53 drill bits and a carbide 1/16" drill bit for drilling the detent catch hole into the hardened blade.

Now my question is what drill chuck do I need for the small bits I have? The mills drill chuck only goes down to 7/64" which is not small enough for the small bits. Should I buy a 1/32" - 1/2" drill chuck with R8 arbor? I found one already for $30.

Or is there a special collet or something that will accept the smaller bits?

I also bought a .200" thick piece of titanium that will be enough for 6 folders. I am so close I can taste it!!

Thanks.

Really dig your past work. I can see your design influence from those to the folder. I do think the design is a bit over-stout (you already know that), but in terms of popularity I can see it working. Not sure how long the whole "beast" knife fad will last, but it looks like you have the chops to make changes.

Good for you on having the will to go forward with this. I just hang around hoping some will rub off on me. :p

your design looks great. however I would be suspect of the lock. I don't make many folders so I am no expert, but anything above the center point of the pivot is going to do nothing for lock strength or lock up. also the closer to the pivot center point the lock is the less effective it will be. you have a long lever(the blade) a fulcrum(the pivot pin) and a short working end(the tang behind the pivot point. your Ti frame lock may be strong enough that it won't be an issue. As I said I am no expert.

I thought of the lock issue and already made some design changes in the lock geometry. I am no engineer but the new geometry should work better than the normal lock geometry. The blade tang when pushed, will put downward pressure and also rearward pressure on the lock. To me this would take some pressure of the relief cut and it would actually push the lock into the titanium frame and I think it would actually have less chance of failing, especially at the lock relief.

wow! love the style of your fixed blades. That kiridashi is perfect as far as I'm concerned. Would love to find one like it. As for the folder, I think the design will do well for what you want it. Kinda reminiscent of the Strider SJ75 style to me.

I finished the lock side and the blade. I am going to redo the G10 side with black G10 so it is not pictured. I still need to drill for detent, heat treat blade, and do the final lock fit and it will be finished. I flame colored the titanium a golden straw color. I still need to add some jimping on the frame and blade.

I tweaked the design a bit as I went. I managed to get the stop pin to work in the open and closed position, so now I either need to mill out a hole in the blade or add a thumb stud. The frame is a little smaller overall becuase the initial design was just huge. The blade is 3 1/2" and the total length is 8". For now There will be only be one standoff and the pivot pin holding it all together. If I feel it needs another standoff I will add one.

The blade is 1/4" D2 and I made a recurve blade because I really like em. The top hole in the clip is for the standoff/clip screw. The bottom screw in the clip is tapped into the frame. This way I only have to tap one hole.

Sorry I didn't take any progress pics. It was about 20 degrees the last few days and I was trying to hurry.

I still have not received my mill so up to this point no mill has been used.

Here are some pics.

Here are some pics. About 90% complete. Just need to clean it up a bit, HT, set detent, and fine tune the lock. I went with coyote G10, I think it looks ok. I may do black in the future. I am very happy with it so far. Fingers crossed that the last few steps goes well!

Thanks for looking!
