Framlock or Linerlock

Do you guys agree that liner-locks have their lives shortened by guys who just over open and close them for the effect?

i dont just think opening and closing them effects liner locks or frame locks to any big degree, inertia opening the liner locks or to a lesser degree waving liner locks a whole whole lot probably does get them out of adjustment quicker, i dont think it effects frame locks at all FWIW, oh maybe if ya were obssesive/compulsive about it and did it a hundred times a day for say 3 yrs or something, but i dont think the average person will hurt a frame lock.

and then again a bud has a emerson commander '99 model he edc's at work(he's a framing contractor FWIW), and has for the last 8 or 9 yrs, & he cuts EVERYTHING with that knife, waves it no telling how many times a day, inertia opens it quite a bit, and the liner is maybe a HAIR past 1/3 of the way, really right were it should be, and locks up fine. i get to examine the knife every month or 2, and have since it was new, he cant sharpen it so he always gets me to do it when it gets dull, and it is as scuffed/scratched/stained as much as any EKI i have ever seen, but lockup on it is 100%.

go figure, huh?

Tanks, 1A. I never had a prob. with a LL, either. A CQC-7, is on the way! Later.

One of my 12s seemed to wear through the lock pretty quickly. It was at ~30% out the box and after about 4-5 weeks it was at ~90%+ its sat there for a while but it cant be far off going to 100%
My other 12 is at about 25-30% but i dont use that one at all so thats what it was like out the box.

I have two liner locks that jump right to the other side of the tang, the 2nd denet is the only thing stoping it going right off the tang. those knives have had a few years use but nothing crazy.

This is a pic. of my user 12s lock up as it is today.

Yup, One of the liner locks is the Persian im going to frame lock eventually the other is a mini7 wich i have a few of any way so its just sitting doing nothing till i cannibalise it or fix it up in some way.
The 12 obviously still has a good bit of life left in it yet so il worry about that when its actually goosed.

Il be going back to Scotland for a few weeks at the end of June so im absolutly itching to get started on my TKmini7s frame lock :D:thumbup:

I have a friend with a 12 that has been all the way across the contact to the other side washer for years but its never once gave him any vertical blade play. That 12 is going to be ok for a good long while before you will need to worry with it.

Speaking of wear though. You know some folks are just harder on things than others are. Sometimes I think it has more to do with who owns it than it does the product. For example, I have a friend that way that is really abrasive all around. I really believe if he had my carry knife for a week and gave it back to me that it would be worn and show signs of a lot of wear faster with him than if I carried it for a year. He is like this on everything from guitar strings, a new wallet or pocket knife to heavy duty tools, cars, trucks, you name it. Anything this guy gets his hands on is going to suffer more than if it came to me. I've just accepted this. As another example, we both bought out Pinzgauer x Swiss army trucks at the same time. They were beautiful condition machines when we drove them home and these are tough machines made to last. Five years later you would never know it though looking at his compared to the one I had. You want to know the truth I felt sorry for his Pinzgauer. Here is a machine that made it through 25 years of service in the Swiss Army and was sold at auction in pristine shape only to go to him where it saw wear and tear like it never got anywhere before. This is the person Hertz Rental Car has nightmares about! :D Go figure is all you can do with things like this. The guy is just abrasive on stuff. I see that a lot and have noticed this even with some knives I've had and sold that came back to me later.

I guess my point is you can't always lay the blame on the manufacturer. A lot of times its the user of the product that should get the lions share of the blame for the condition of the product you see no matter what it may be.

STR

You have a good point there STR, back home when i was working as a chainsaw operator I beat the bojangles out of my knives. As you say some people are just harder on their stuff than others. I must just be one of the abrasive indeviduals :D

The lock on that 12 has sat where it is for a while now and im sure it will keep kicking ass for a long time still.
The Persian i think was a bit of a lemon, the mini7 got beat up and used allot but it did wear out faster than my others but its a non issue really, i could have probably send it back to EKI for a tune up but then wheres the fun in that :D

Gentlemen, and I use the term loosely, Emerson's slogan, "HARD USE," could be a factor in this!
