Happy thanksgiving all.
After putting off building a grinder until I could do everything textbook, I got tired of not making knives and slapped something together.
Tracks and runs well. Griz motor (I think 1hp) is a bit small but should work fine for now. A little more tweaking is needed. sometimes if I try to grind as if I was cutting in a plung and really push hard, the belt tries to walk. Also The shop I had cut bearing slots into the Griz wheel screwed it up and there is a bit of wobble in the wheel. Like the bearings aren't center. I hope That someone can fix it. I planned on using it as a contact wheel.
The machine is somewhere in between a grizzly and a no weld (only welded)
Motor, tracking, platen, and lower 8" wheel is griz.
Everything else is basically no weld.
When first assembled I measured (lol, measure) for a single 8" wheel set up thinking I could just slide the arm in and out to compensate. It worked great! Later I received my flat platen plate from polar bear, and roughly laid it out and realized everything was too spread out and that a 72" belt was way too short. So, a few pieces were cut apart and considerably shortened. I wanted a multi use platen, 3", 8" and the flat. With the 3"on top, 8" on bottom, I had to extend the platen side plate. If you notice I have some scrap plate welded onto the bottom. This gives everything enough room. BUT! Lol, it drops lower thn the grinder itself! Luckily my bench already had a lower side so I just hang it off. The platen ended up at the right height.
The tracking wheel is funny. I used part of the tracking assembly that was on the Griz. There was a huge unthread axle, like 1" or so, that the tracking wheel was on, instead of messing with Figuring out how to get it down to the typical configuration, I just welded it to the no weld grinder set up. Weird, but it works.
Just a few more things to finish up or tweak and I'll be grinding. On the test scrap metal, it is soooo much easier to grind a straight line than it was with the Griz.
Have a good laugh!
Ignore the junk. We just bought this house and moved in, so Everything is still a mess. I just pull things out as I need them. Garage is not a "shop" yet.
