Hey guys I'd like to share a little story that happened on 2/16. I didn't really want to share earlier because it felt like I did a stupid mistake but here it goes. 2/16 was any old rainy day, I just finished my AA degree and have a break until I transfer to a real university. So I decided to go on a little hike alone, since my girlfriend is at work. As I was driving up the mountains I noticed a lot of rocks falling down on the road but thought nothing of it, I proceeded to park at parking lot. As I was hiking around 3 miles down hill of just rained on trail, I decided to go a little off trail....big mistake. I was scrambling and climbing across some rocks up stream and I encountered this huge rock so I decided to climb it. I jumped on it and struggled but eventually I got on top of it. As I was slowly going back to trail I had to lean on some rocks for support and skip across the stream rocks. Just when I was clearing the 2nd to last stone with my left hand supporting me the rock gave way!!! I'm not sure if it dislodged itself from the new rain water or if it crumbled but it cut about an inch gash on my left middle finger. (I felt it hit bone :barf: ) It didn't hurt at first, almost like a knife cut but than blood started to squirt all over the place and I was the only person on that less traveled trail! luckily I had my first aid kit and I covered my middle finger with gauze up, I used the whole roll and the blood soaked it in half a min to a min! I didn't know fingers are so vascular. Don't worry it gets better.:jerkit: So I have to make hike 3 miles up with blood stained shirt, backpack, pants and shoes and hopefully I can make it to someone that can give me some more gauze or help me out right? WRONG!! I met 2 hikers and all they did was stare in shock, say hello and run down trail. Just my luck eh  I eventually reached the pack station and they helped me out.what sucked was the wound was already clotting with the gauze so I had to rip the clot off, it hurts more than you think. The gash was huge!! I didn't look at it clearly until they had me rinse it out with hot water. They panicked because of was literally painting their house with my blood :p . So eventually they wrapped it up for me and I drove to the E.R. and was admitted around 4:30. The nurse had to take a look at it so guess what? I had to remove gauze again!! and it clotted way better than it did before. So as i removed the gauze I noticed it stopped bleeding...until I had to rip the clot again :grumpy:. as she examined it I just sit there bleeding all over their gurney until 7!! finally the doc shows up and tells me she is gonna let someone x-ray it and that did not happen until 8. Eventually they took me to the x-ray and I had to remove gauze again.... I was thinking I should of left it bleeding so it wouldn't have to hurt when I have to show people the wound :o . I bled all over their table and FINALLY the doctor came and numbed me(its suppose to be powerful enough for 2 hrs), started irrigating the wound and stitching me up (this was around 9 now so I have been bleeding for some time) She even had to put a tournacat (sp?) on my finger because the blood was not allowing her to sew me up correctly. At last she was on her 10th stitch until bad went to WORSE. I started to feel the needle... I asked her to numb me some more but she couldn't SOOO I had to bear the last 5 stitches feeling every movement. It hurts alot more than it looks. Anyways I am healing up nicely and here are the pics. (pic 1 was taken 4 days after the ER and pic 2 is around 2/28)

"So I have to make hike 3 miles up with blood stained shit..."

Oh man, you even sliced your anus????

Sorry Sorry, couldn't resist! :)

I give up huge applause for having your first aid kit with you!
AND
For posting this, to remind us that it can happen in the blink of an eye, without being in warzone.

Looks like you are patched up, and will be back at it soon!

thanks for sharing, that wasn't dumb at all.

Gee Kevshin21,

You got any pictures of blood??????? At least your all right. And we are not reading where you had to cut your arm off or something.

haha edited it :p thanks for pointing it out. edit: well my first aid kit still has a bit of blood on it and my pack too if you want me to take a pic of that too... I gotta get my girlfriends camera though since i'ma cheap bastard.

Man i saw 15 stitches in the title, and the word LOONG, and I thought maybe you have severed your arm just below the elbow.

Glad you are OK.

Nope, old dried blood don't look quite as good. Next time take your camera. Show us a fresh wound.

It's good to know under pressure --YOU KEPT YOUR COOL!!!

Most people do not!!!!!

 on keeping your head-up and I'm sorry it took so long to get help.

Those first two people you met on the trail... how the heck does a person just walk away, seeing someone cut like that? I bet any of these guys around here would have walked you out and probably given you some more guaze, tape, an Ibuprofen, whatever.

But hey, all's well that ends well, glad you're OK!

Nasty. Think if you had been way out there, you could have eventually stopped the bleeding but it could open again easily and survival would have been near impossible. (Try making a fire and a shelter 1 handed!)
Les Stroud tried doing an episode with 1 arm tied up to simulate a broken arm, but that lasted all of about an hour.

Early last fall, I was out working my dog on some planted quail, and wanted to shoot a blank shot cartridge for her, but I didn't have any prepared. So I decided to open up a shotshell and dump out all the powder and shot, leaving the primer for the noise.

I'd never done that before, and decided to use my pocket knife.

Shotshells are made of very tough plastic. You should really open the crimp, not try to cut it open. A leatherman small screwdriver, and then the pliers works very well.

A pocket knife does not. I cut my left forefinger when the knife slipped right out of the plastic. Looked like it was about as long as yours, right along side the nail, too. I had some butterflies in my first aid kit, though. I used up a lot of gauze, too. I didn't bother getting it stitched, since the butterflies were working fine.

Sucks, doesn't it!!

That's what a before pic of a 15 stitcher looks like. No fun to be processing ice cold game meats and loose track of where your frozen index finger is.

mine was a bit different , instead of a slice it was more of a cut to the center but ouch! I think this thread is gonna be renamed "post pics of your gory accidents!!"

Man, I think I wrote the book on chopping off pieces of yourself. I slice off the tip of my left pinky and baby toe at the same time once wrestling (drunken fighting with a friend).

Did you lose any feeling in yours, mine hasn't come back yet which is great for picking up hot pots.

Congratulations on your new scar! People with scars are people worth knowing. Scars are a sign that you've lived.

Glad you're okay!

so far the stitch area feels like a numb shell, I hope I didn't sever anything, but the tip is more or less numb. I hope I get back the feeling because it would suck since I like playing guitar.

ahhhhh walk it off and rub some dirt in it and youll be fine its good for ya puts hair on your chest

Jeez buddy, you sure opened up that finger. Bet it'll wake you up now and then during your sleep for a few days. I shot a 6 inch housing spike through my finger years ago with a nail gun. Kinda sucked............Good reminder about bringing some first aid kit.

I keep a small tube of super glue in my first aid kit for just this type of thing. Glad you got it taken care of, it does look painful!

Quik clot also works well for larger injuries, I keep a pouch of it in the shop. but its main drawbacks are that it burns like a.... fire and needs to be cleaned out of the wound (ouch!) before recieving treatment. I've heard that HemCon works just as well, or better, than quikclot and without the burning or need to clean but it costs about 3 times as much!
