freak accident,15 stitches,LOONG story and 2 pics(graphic)!!

Hey guys I'd like to share a little story that happened on 2/16.
. . .
So I have to make hike 3 miles up with blood stained shirt, backpack, pants and shoes and hopefully I can make it to someone that can give me some more gauze or help me out right? WRONG!! I met 2 hikers and all they did was stare in shock, say hello and run down trail. Just my luck eh
NOT a unique experience, unfortunately. I and some friends ran into a guy in Oregon with a similar story.

He got up in the middle of the night to "water a tree," and ran his cheek into the broken off stub of a pine branch. The result was a badly torn cheek.

He said that he had encountered several sets of backpackers on this stretch of the Pacific Crest Trail, and, according to him, "They just ran off." He did look a mess with a blood-soaked bandage around the middle of his face and blood all over his shirt.

So it would be nice to think that fellow backpackers/hikers will help out, but . . . . :o

thats ok with the running off from a cut i have a friend that when our bouyscout troop went sking his buddys left him to ski down and he fell halfway tore his ACL and was screaming for help and people stop and looked at him ant didnt do anything not even get a ems guy or anything our leader had to pick him up and support him while the went down

so far the stitch area feels like a numb shell, I hope I didn't sever anything, but the tip is more or less numb. I hope I get back the feeling because it would suck since I like playing guitar.

If you didn't cut a tendon, you should have no worries. If you can move that last bit of the finger, you're likely OK. (Of course it will be stiff and sore or numb). It looks like a clean cut, that's a GOOD thing. Consult a professional if it still feels messed-up or gets worse in a week.

The scar will always be there but shouldn't be intrusive, as far as playing goes. I assure you, give it some time to heal up all the way and you'll be fine. I have not one, but two to-the-bone clean cuts on my fret-hand index finger, last joint. Once they healed, they have had no effect at all on my feel/touch.

BIG  on butterfly sutures and Nu-Skin or superglue. They belong in every FAK in my humble opinion. I hadn't even heard about Quick-Clot before reading this post; sounds like that is better for bigger wounds?

Regarding what you've all said about fellow travelers not helping you out when you're hurt... man, that burns me up  Who raised those people? But your examples remind me to watch out and be willing to help someone if I can.

I met 2 hikers and all they did was stare in shock, say hello and run down trail. Just my luck eh  I eventually reached the pack station and they helped me out.what sucked was the wound was already clotting with the gauze so I had to rip the clot off, it hurts more than you think.

First of all those two hikers should be ashamed of themselves  Anyone who isnt prepared to change their plans and deal with an injury in your own group or another has no buisiness in the woods. even before I was an Emt i would have and have in the past stopped to offer aid to a fellow traveler in trouble. I hope the the gods of the woods reap a bloody vengance on them.

I dont know the qualifications of the guys in the pack station but as an emt I was taught not to re open woulds in the feild you add to existing bandages especially if clotting has begun. You dont remove the bandage attached to the wound even if its just a rag in place.

Im glad you had a first aid kit and I am glad you are okay

I have a quick clot finger kit that is actually designed for this type of
wound as well as butterflies and other odds in my pack.

This does however point out the dangers of both solo hiking (which i do too) and Hiking off trail (which I have been ticketed for)

An injury like this can be a problem. Put pressure on it to top the bleeding but this can tie up both hands. Don't know how true this is but some people have resorted to using a certain orafice of the body to put pressure on the wound and leave the other hand free. Probably work in a pinch, eh?

Hey guys I'd like to share a little story that happened on 2/16. I didn't really want to share earlier because it felt like I did a stupid mistake but here it goes. 2/16 was any old rainy day, I just finished my AA degree and have a break until I transfer to a real university. So I decided to go on a little hike alone, since my girlfriend is at work. As I was driving up the mountains I noticed a lot of rocks falling down on the road but thought nothing of it, I proceeded to park at parking lot. As I was hiking around 3 miles down hill of just rained on trail, I decided to go a little off trail....big mistake. I was scrambling and climbing across some rocks up stream and I encountered this huge rock so I decided to climb it. I jumped on it and struggled but eventually I got on top of it. As I was slowly going back to trail I had to lean on some rocks for support and skip across the stream rocks. Just when I was clearing the 2nd to last stone with my left hand supporting me the rock gave way!!! I'm not sure if it dislodged itself from the new rain water or if it crumbled but it cut about an inch gash on my left middle finger. (I felt it hit bone :barf: ) It didn't hurt at first, almost like a knife cut but than blood started to squirt all over the place and I was the only person on that less traveled trail! luckily I had my first aid kit and I covered my middle finger with gauze up, I used the whole roll and the blood soaked it in half a min to a min! I didn't know fingers are so vascular. Don't worry it gets better.:jerkit: So I have to make hike 3 miles up with blood stained shirt, backpack, pants and shoes and hopefully I can make it to someone that can give me some more gauze or help me out right? WRONG!! I met 2 hikers and all they did was stare in shock, say hello and run down trail. Just my luck eh  I eventually reached the pack station and they helped me out.what sucked was the wound was already clotting with the gauze so I had to rip the clot off, it hurts more than you think. The gash was huge!! I didn't look at it clearly until they had me rinse it out with hot water. They panicked because of was literally painting their house with my blood :p . So eventually they wrapped it up for me and I drove to the E.R. and was admitted around 4:30. The nurse had to take a look at it so guess what? I had to remove gauze again!! and it clotted way better than it did before. So as i removed the gauze I noticed it stopped bleeding...until I had to rip the clot again :grumpy:. as she examined it I just sit there bleeding all over their gurney until 7!! finally the doc shows up and tells me she is gonna let someone x-ray it and that did not happen until 8. Eventually they took me to the x-ray and I had to remove gauze again.... I was thinking I should of left it bleeding so it wouldn't have to hurt when I have to show people the wound :o . I bled all over their table and FINALLY the doctor came and numbed me(its suppose to be powerful enough for 2 hrs), started irrigating the wound and stitching me up (this was around 9 now so I have been bleeding for some time) She even had to put a tournacat (sp?) on my finger because the blood was not allowing her to sew me up correctly. At last she was on her 10th stitch until bad went to WORSE. I started to feel the needle... I asked her to numb me some more but she couldn't SOOO I had to bear the last 5 stitches feeling every movement. It hurts alot more than it looks. Anyways I am healing up nicely and here are the pics. (pic 1 was taken 4 days after the ER and pic 2 is around 2/28)

That looks like a nasty paper cut.
Watch out for infections :D

I just got back from the hospital myself, I accidently stabbed the tip my CS outdoorsman almost all the way through my hand from the palm side, its about an inch wide. luckily I didn't sever any tendons, they just stiched it up. looks like I'm as good as a one armed man for the next week. :thumbdn:
