Freaky hamon, had to kill it

Derrick,

Is that the 5/8W-2, because I just had a some trouble with trying to edge quench that same steel. I use a 7-9 second oil. Gave up after the 2nd try, ended up clay-coated it. The blade is wild looking. A light etch shows the edge quench and the hamon from the clay coat and yes, it hardened.

PS- Your 2nd try looks real nice.

I use both Tough Quench and Parks 50 for w2 with great results. I'm with you Don; I do a quick peek grind too. FWIW, I can get the blade to curve up or down in oil, it all depends on soak times and temps...

That is too cool Matt, I didn't know it could be done:thumbup: I have had one or two blades curve up in oil but didn't give it much thought.

Joe, Tough Quench is a fast oil and works great on W2. Park's 50 is much faster and this comes in handy with hamon development and will give a point or two higher RC hardness.

Yes...but sadly (unless I am mistaken) Parks #50 is no longer available.

Aldo, yeah, this is the 5/8 round bar - same stuff I used on that other little integral I posted. I'm having fun with it.

I was under the impression that the Ellis' stuff was somehow different....guess I should choose my sources more carefully. :grumpy:

Good news is...they'll be at Blade!
Great time to pick up a couple gallons.

I would love to have some in my vertical quench tank.....*drool*

Hi Dan, We've renamed it for obvious reasons, that's all. Who told you differently if you don't mind me asking...email me if you don't want to post that info?

:)

Darren - could you put me down for 5 gallons of the stuff?

No need to name names....I'm sure you could guess. ;)

i just ordered the 5 gallons that I wanted to buy at Batsons but couldn't fit in my car:thumbup: :D Darren....is it in a steel bucket or plastic? If plastic, I want to run out to HD and buy a 5 gallon steel paint bucket to use as a verticle qunch tank for my W2 blades.

Hi Joe, It's in plastic buckets. We wanted to keep costs down as low as possible and I have been unable to find any metal containers around here that are reasonable...

:)

What sizes do you sell Darren, and how much are you bringing to Blade?? I'd like to buy a gallon, but five seems like overkill for me.

Andy,

We sell the quench oil in any gallon quantity you want. It is $18/gallon or $75 for 5 gallons. If you want us to set some aside for you at the show, just let us know.

Thanks,
Kathryn (& Darren) :)

Just to bring this thread back full circle :D I'll be just a few tables down from Darren and Kathryn at 25Q and will hopefully have this knife completed and on my table. :) Wish me luck!
