  • Today marks the 24th anniversary of 9/11. I pray that this nation does not forget the loss of lives from this horrible event. Yesterday conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was murdered, and I worry about what is to come. Please love one another and your family in these trying times - Spark

Fredy's new shop

Had some friends on weekend to help go through the wall. Found some holes, made some holes, closed some holes.

Small finishing left, but 1-2 weeks of good weather and drying and we should be ready for paint.

There was a small pause due to the construction manager (my wife) setting the terrace works as priority. In a recent change of events I am switching jobs, so I have couple of spare weeks to push the works in the shop forward.
Last 4 days I have been busy, will post progress soon!

Chippy paint stripped, walls, defects and small holes filled in.

Some details.

Double glass wool insulation for the walls. Just so that they are not hollow and maybe to keep the volume down for grinding and even some heat retention in winter.

Tomorrow I am borrowing the power washer to wash the floor.

Next steps - finalize the sliding door system (simple diy barn door sliding system) and mount the sliding doors, wash and varnish the floor (I have been given a special sealant by a friend) and get the lights and electricity sorted (an electrician will be putting an additional fuse box).

I've just realized I have not posted any pics from the final results. Last year I coated the floors with an acrylic protectant, had an electrician over to set up a power box and connect everything and installed the grinding room doors on a diy sliding door system:

January and February I took a break as it was quite cold and I in winter I also like spending some free evenings on the couch. The work continued in March, by moving the workshop. I have been busy lately sorting out the things, setting up shelves and storage.

On the left it will be the general house & bike stuff and a car place/movable work space (currently the car is in the car port), but I would like to take on restoring a small boat next year. On the right it is the grinding room and the clean/storage space for knife work.

Moving in...

Next up is the grinding room, setting up all the nice things I didn't have in the last shop:

- ventilation
- dust deputy/vacuming system
- disc grinder (sharing a vfd with 50x2000)
- cool mist (still need to buy a compressor)

Ideally I would sell some of unneeded stuff and get a new metal bandsaw and a small lathe for the money.

General plan now is:

1. Find and repair all the water leaks (roof and visible cracks are already repaired) CHECK
2. Dry the walls, throw everything out including the wooden separators CHECK
3. Put a hole in the wall, install a large fan for the grinding room and for taking out the humidity CHECK
4. Paint the walls with a paint based on concrete CHECK
5. Install more lights and electricity outlets CHECK
6. Build a small grinding room out of OSB board with sliding doors and glass windows for light CHECK

Happy to say that less then a year I was able to pull the above and much more off. Looking forward to to next steps and hopefully until summer I will be able to start working on the knifes again. I will start working on the new to-lo list.

I love and you are lucky. I've lived in rougher places, as a young man.
I consider myself to be lucky as well. I have always worked hard towards my goals, but being born elsewhere or in different conditions, it wouldn't mean anything, so luck played a big role as well.

There is actually pieces of our old bedroom (the large wardrobe) and a shoe closet in the clean room of the shop. My mom suggested putting a bed in for the guests and I am not entirely sure it was just a joke.

Small AC for the summer is already in and I am planning some IR heating panels hanged from the ceiling in the grinding and clean room as well.

Thanks, it helps with staying on track. And yeah, it's getting there. I will call it a shop once I've made the first knife in it. For now it's just "the garage". Still needs to live up to "the shop".
