Hey, people. Any of you in KY who are interested, I'm giving a free class next month at Big Sandy Community and Technical College in Prestonsburg, KY:

April 16, 2009 6pm

Hiker Survival 101

What if I get turned around and end up lost?
Is it safer to stay put or try to hike out?
What if I run out of water?
What kind of equipment should I take with me?
How do I stay warm if it's cold out?

All questions that keep some people on the beaten path or off the trail altogether.

Learn what to do to to stay warm and dry if the temperature drops or weather sets in.
Learn what to do if your water runs low, or worse, OUT.
Learn what a Personal Survival Kit is and how to make your own.
Learn how to keep from getting lost.
Learn how to GET OUT ALIVE.

Room number is yet to be assigned, so I'll put that up once I get it. I've given a class at this campus before. This one was worked up after some specific requests from a few people in my last class.

That's awesome KemSat - It's very rare to get anything free in life these days .

I hope people take advantage of your very generous offer.

Outstanding KemSat!

I'm doing a free class this weekend in our local national forest for a church group covering the same basic things, with some other fun things thrown in because it's expected by the uninitiated.

Keep up the good work. I do some SAR and the more everyone else knows, the easier it is for those who have to go in and find them.

It's almost time for the hiking crowd to start padding along in my mountains, so I figure I'll give them some tricks to not get dead with.

Good stuff like what to do if they encounter an axe wielding inbred cannibal, they're dropping a deuce and get bit on the arse by a copperhead...
Things like that...

That's cool man, hope it goes well. Are you using a more socratic method or did you write up a powerpoint/handout type thing?

Handouts, demonstration and such.
I don't use a whole lot of Powerpoint.
People seem to retain the information better if they see it deomnstrated live.
