Free dropping compression lock?

It's just not a big deal to me.

My S110V PM2 drops like a champ after a bit of lube, (Slip 2000 EWL), and repeated opening and closings...my new PM2 in Cru-Wear and PM3 in Maxamet drop not at all (as yet).

I've lubed the latter two, (just because), but if they don't break in and drop freely, I don't think I'll be losing any sleep over it nor adjusting the pivot. (Certainly won't be taking the knives apart just for that.)

To each his own.

Alot of time you can get these to freedrop by adjusting the stop pin screw without even touching the pivot.

I don't see why you'd want the blade to drop free. If it does, and it closes with any force, it will probably rebound and remain partially open. I like to finish the closing process with my thumb as I re-pocket the knife anyway. And I prefer absolute zero play to a free drop.

Think I have 22 of these now, and 5 have been disassembled. The pivots can be greatly smoothed out, while keeping a little friction, which is what I like. Most of the newer P2's are probably fine out of the box, unless you really want that extra smoothness - which is not going to come from just cycling the knife.

Having a similar issue... My S110V and M390 PM2s drop freely. The ones I have in S30V and S35VN do not... the S30V is getting closer just from "wearing in." I disassembled the S35VN, cleaned and lubricated -- still doesn't drop shut, even with pivot adjustments. I'm going to keep using it and make small adjustments along the way. Ultimately it's not the end of the world to me if they don't drop shut, but I do prefer it given a choice.

All my PM2s and my Para 3 are free dropping. I like them like that for consistency, so I know what to expect. I also appreciate the design, where you can have a solid lockup with one handed free dropping close.

That said, I almost never free drop close it in real use. I always give it a flick of the wrist. Many times the knife is upside down, or horizontal to the ground when being closed. The momentum from the wrist flick allows me to release the lock before the bladed closes/bounces. It rides on the detent the last 1/4” or so. Closes on the first time every time.

I don't think "free dropping" is a concern, but if ya care, get a dual action out-the-front and fugetaboutit :). Spyderco needs to make one, put the hole in the tip of the blade for grins to hold the blade in :)
