Free Knife SCORE! ....Not! LOL...PICS

I would be afraid my twelve year old son would find it in my sock drawer and he would bust my ----s forever about he call it my Barney knife. I got a Rambo knife for my birthday when I was a kid pulled it out of the sheath and mom took it away never to be seen again probably why my brother and me like guns and knifes so much.

My 4 yr old nephew would go bananas for that. That boy has a serious dino-addiction! Haha!

If the thing is made in japan and is around 20 years old the steel is probably ok ,I had an old frost from around then and it was actually an ok knife. But then the knife I owned had a discernible purpose. It would be funny to see what you get in trade maybe someone will give you something better and you can trade and trade on up to a sebbie!!

I agree with your assessment. Believe it or not, the Japanese made Frost knives from the late 70s/early 80s were actually decent quality. I have a Frost from the same period and it will take a fine edge and holds it for a decent amount of use. I have a stainless Case stockman from the same period that's a worse performer.

Unfortunately, there's also the matter of aesthetics...

So my younger brother finds out I've gotten into collecting knives and he tells me he's got a knife for me that I can have. He's pretty excited about it and says he can't wait to give it to me. I'm kinda of excited, wondering what could it be?

So next time I'm over his house, he comes out other room with this fixed blade. At first glance I can tell it's weird, just by the handle and the sheath.

I pull the sucker out and I was like oh man. I think I threw up in my mouth a little. Haha LOL. :p

This is what I was given -

:D:D:D

I guess as the story goes, our grandparents bought this for him when he was a little kid and brought it back like from a trip to Florida or something.

It does say "Frost Cutlery Surgical Steel" on one side and it's stamped "JAPAN" on the other.

So now I'm stuck with this thing. Gee thanks Bro. :) Anyone want a knife? LOL.

Just thought it was a funny story to share..
I have a birthday coming up next month...Just sayin'.:D.:D.

I suppose we've all heard something like this, "So you collect pocket knives? You can have this one I found in my car."

I've gotten a few, one in particular, that make the Din-o-Frost look like a William Henry.

Do like I do, thank the person for the generous and thoughtful gift, and stash it away in a designated Velveeta box for safekeeping. :)

I can't wait til this knife arrives (I think it arrived, I can pick it up tomorrow)! Pics shall follow of course. Thanks again mann0mann!

IIRC frost used 12c27 steel during the good ole days correct?

Wait... you really bought it? Or am I missing something? Hilarious knife BTW!

If the steel is halfway decent I would be modifying that knife so fast it would make your head spin! First I'd take my Dremel tool and cut off those atrocious dorsal spikes, then I'd remove the pointy pommel and round the butt of the handle to something comfortable and safe in hand. After that I would refine the tip and maybe contour the handle for a more secure grip. Once that was done I'd sharpen it and then ...? At that point it would stand a chance of being a useful tool. If the steel was lousy, well, there is always Halloween.

Edited to add: That dinosaur decal is coming off right away, too.

So funny!!!

I am pretty sure my dad bought me a crappy folder for my Bday this year. He gave my brother one, and I saw a knife looking present in the pantry.

It is a folding tanto bade with serrations "kabar" brand. (at least if it is the same one my older brother just go).

I was hoping it was a Great Eastern Cuttlery Sunfish.........A guy can dream.

Neither my dad nor my brother share my appreciation for good knives (or maybe I should say they are not willing to spend any real money on knives).

My dad buys super crappy $8 dollar grip tape/aluminum handle, built in seat belt cutter POS's and hands them to me to check out.

Super funny, because he will buy a nice 22-250, put a nice scope on it, have a trigger and action job done, and still won't spend any real money on a nice knife.

He has one nice custom fighter (but only because my uncle was a Custom Knife Maker before he passed away).

I have an older Frost Cutlery knife, a small fixed blade. Also made in Japan.

Quality is head and shoulders above today's production in that brand.

Spend a little time and put a decent edge on it, if it doesn't already have one.

Then take it for an extended test drive. It may perform better than you expect.

If it sux, hey, it was free. If it performs, hey, outstanding!

I does have that certain . . . je ne sais quoi. <Chuckle>

Still, I think it's worth testing.

If it wasn't for the fact that it is a "Frost" blade, which we all know is a terrible brand, I would get it. The knife looks kinda cool, despite the dino sticker, I have a blade from Frost cutlery, its a weird, not practical at all bowie that has the same type of cool and funky tie dye looking grip. IDK I think all kids should at least have a Frost knife once in their lives, it looks cool and funky and its big and looks badass. The as we grow up we realize that they are crap and then upgrade to a kabar or buck and other decent brands. I say if nothing else cherish the the excited look in your brother's face when he gave it to you, he thought it was a diamond in the rough, it's the memories that go with that knife that makes the knife priceless.

Put some spray paint/rustoleum on it to cover that terrible sticker. Those can be taken back off, in case somebody wants to buy it off of you. Don't deface the blade with a Dremel. Terrible decal or not, unless you refinish both sides it will look worse in the long run.
