I thought that i would make an offer to anyone that needs it. I will hardness test your knife for free if you send it to me. you just cover shiping and thats all. just thought i would offer as it might help out some people.

Just to let you know the test i will be doing for you is just a Rock well hardness test on the tester i have at work. you just need to use a permanent marker and circle the area(s) you would like tested. the tests does put a little dimple in the steel so you should be aware of that. that's why i would like you to mark where you would like to have it tested so the dimple is in an OK spot on the blade. you can also send me more then one knife at a time.

Very generous JT. Just one question. How will you deal with the fact that a blade doesn't have a flat and square surface to test on? It's my understanding that the angle of the bevel can cause erroneous results. I had always figured it better to heat treat a steel coupon in the same batch as your blade, with the same HT, and have that tested.

Thanks :thumbup:, it is really a great opportunity for most of us in order to get much more info about our HT routines. JT, I really like to know exactly what I'm doing, If your offer includes international I'm really interested, email sent...

when marking an area for testing, stay away from the edge area. when i get a blade tested i just let my friend pick the spot. he usually tests up by the tip and back by the grind start. a sloped surface will give a different reading also.

That is indeed very generous.

To avoid shipping charges back, I could just send a hunk of steel that I treat as I do my knives and a simple letter envelope should suffice to get it there...

Yes that is true i can only test on a flat surface. most of the time on my knives i don't take the edge bevel all the way to the spine before heat treat and i test there or right behind the plunge cut where there is no taper. if you wanted to send a little chunk of steel that you heat treated with your knife i could test that and then you would not have to worry about return shipping.

Wow, this is so cool of you, Jarod. I may have to send a little chunk of this (don't laugh) bedframe steel that I just made a blade from and have you tell me what the RC is. I'd appreciate it a lot. How small can the piece of steel be?

well i would say nothing under 1" by 1" as i have to surface grind it if it has not been polished up to 400-600 grit already. I don't need anything huge but if its to small then its a pain to work with.

For all that need to know My address is

Jarod Todd

Thanks Jarod, I'll HT a batch of 1" X 1 1/2" D2 and RWL34 pieces I'll etch a code for each piece so there will not be any confusion of which is which and they'll be polished and flat...
