Free Speech and Real Lives

Rob, if you find a rattlesnake in the yard where the kids are playing, you're either going to kill it, or catch it and remove it. Some things are just that clear cut, no reasonable person would have a problem with it. But sometimes things aren't so clear, and it comes down to somebody having to have the guts to make a decision. We are blessed with mods that are intelligent, reasonable, people, and I honestly believe they'd listen to us if we ever thought they acted prematurely or too heavy handed. With the authority of their position comes the responsibility to take action when, in their judgement, it becomes necessary. However, understand that we also have a shared responsibility to police ourselves, and as long as we do that, and keep things within reasonable boundaries of courtesy and decency, the mods can all just kick back and watch the fun. That's the way it ought to be, but sometimes it simply isn't.

I hope that all the mods hear the opinions voiced in this thread--AND that threads like this are encouraged--clearing the air is always less painful than waiting until the Sh** hits the fan.

Uncle Bill used to start threads just like this one when things got tense. It served as a pressure release valve and made folks feel like they had a say in things.

I vote for more open discussion threads of mod policy and goings on like this one. After all it is our forum too. We as crewmembers and oarsmen, have a right to know in what direction the ship is being steered.

Good stuff and thanks!;)

Bully for y'all.

Some people seem to think that free speech guarentees a platform, well it don't begorrah. The speech is free but the podium is not. If someone stands up in our cantina and hollers "I can whip any man in the house and I've slept with all your fat mother's too." then it's time for Nasty to give Munk the eye and head gesture.

Agreed.
What planet is this?
We've the obligation to our forum to keep it clean, and give ourselves the natural actions and responses that are accepable to our collective judgement.

That means if someone calls my close friend Yangdu a liar, I or anyone here is going to rebuff and confront evil at worst, and communicate and resolve the misunderstanding at best.

As a mod I need the authority to remove a rabid animal without waiting for further bites or a discussion of the depth of puncture wounds.

Since you asked,I am an admin on another forum (yea-believe it or not....:D ) and I like how you do it;as to munk's question here's how I deal with rowdy threads:

I keep an eye out,if it starts getting out of hand I'll ask all involved to cool it and not start a "flame" war;then I'll back off from there I keep going in if it starts up again, but by my third warning I'll give notice that I'll lock it up if it keeps going.

Works well for me.;)

I got no worries about how things are done...If it needs to be done (thread lock), it as a rule must be done quickly to keep the flame from spreading...ahhh ya feel me??

You mod dudes are much nicer than I...I would have moved it to whineandcheese (yea it was a thinly disguised rant!) and then let everyone have at that dude...Liar?? grrrrr:mad:

I have seen flame war's before and enjoyed them...Do I want to see one in the Cantina?? Nope not at all...

I hate being on a DIET!!!!!

At least *my* role here is clear...

If we aren't honest on our forum, there isn't much reason for a forum, other than to learn a few knife facts.

The human experience has a wide range of expression.
I'm counting on it.

My philosophy is to let people be people, and to only moderate when things are truly out of hand. We have a human dignity, I think a enlightened culture here, that must be deferred to. But we cannot protect our best character by 'over protection'.

I agree completely...

I, being the liberal dog that I am, believe wholeheratedly in free speech and all other rights (including the second amendment - making me in my mind an ultra-liberal). I worry more that someone from here risks getting banned, in say, a thread like the recent contentious thread, not by the HI mods, but by the Bladeforum mods in a discussion here with someone who also posts actively in other places in the forum.

I enjoy the "cult" of HI. I also enjoy my paper slicing sharp village sirupate with walnut handle and other HI khukuris. They aren't as "neat and perfect" as some of my makers knives, but they're the ones I cuddle in my sleep. And this is the only forum I consider a must read every day, whether I make the DOTD or not - even though some of you aren't neat, perfect or cuddly...

If ending a thread makes us stop and maybe cool down before we say engage in a "personal attack" such as questioning someone's honesty or integrity, in response to them doing it to someone we care about or at the very least have a great deal of respect for, and we can reopen the thread to discuss it...maybe it's just a cooling off period that means we all still get to continue to enjoy reading posts by someone that may otherwise have been banned for a snap or built-up reaction. If it was ended prematurely, it'll come up again...

When I drain my spaghetti, I always give it a good dose of extra virgin olive oil..

Is this a good thing????

A hearty stir with a 12" Kumar Karda mixes the dish & aligns it with this forum ;)

:D

At first I wondered where this fit in...but then I realized this is the "real lives" componet Brent was adding:D

i find if you put a good dollop of Extra Virgin Olive Oil in the water as the spaghetti boils it keeps it from foaming & boiling over and coats the pasta when you drain it.....and a kumar kobra lets you back away just a bit further from the heat while you stir.

p.s. - the cost of extra virgin olive oil is going up rapidly as the italians are having trouble finding the extra virgins traditionally used to stomp the olives, so best stock up now. (i am continuously amazed that i cannot find regular virgin olive oil, you'd think they'd be easier to find)

I came here looking to learn something about H.I. khukuris. I did... for the record, a lot more than I expected to. I have also learned a lot about all kinds of other things. Like life? ...

Never knew Uncle Bill. Every day I spend knocking around in here, I regret that a little more. But he left a whole lot with us:

This place is pleasently haunted, by all kinds of good ethers, and that, honestly, keeps me coming back and annoying you guys every bit as much as the khuks.

Yep, you guys keep me coming back to annoy you. Guess that makes it your fault. For the record, I have a great deal of respect, for the forum and the people that compose it.

Great thanks from me, to every one of you.
