Free steel... but don't get too excited...

I tend to be the guy everyone contacts when they want to get rid of a bunch of steel... It seems to be a blessing and a curse. Usually it is just a bunch of mild steel, which I still use for making and mending this and that. Sometimes I luck out with some scrap of known content and decent size.

In the last bit of stuff that found my doorstep was a 5 gallon bucket full of rail anchors... For those who don't know, these are sometimes called rail clips and such. They are the anchors that are used on the underside of a train rail to keep the rail from walking on the tie. They are made of high carbon steel (I can't remember the designation I was last told, and have been told several things.) I do know that they spark test as high carbon. I have made a few tools with them, and forged them into stuff from time to time as well. The thing is, I have no use for anywhere near this many of them. I will let them go for free, with a little shipping help please.

Sorry to anyone who was hoping to open the thread and see an offer for a free ton of D-2 or something... :)

I don't know if this is in the wrong place, don't really consider it a sale as they are free, but if the shipping counts I can move it to the appropriate thread. Mods please advise...

Eric...You need to change your settings on the forum to accept emails from members. Otherwise, I need your email.

Within reason, how many do you think will fit in a USPS medium flat rate box? At least 10?

I had one of these analysed, and it was 1055. Of course, that doesn't mean they all are, but I doubt you'll find any made of O1. :-) The short sword I made of it had a pretty good hamon.

K. I will check it soon. Out of the house with the kiddos today... Of course, even that never seems to keep me off of BF... lol. Gotta love tapatalk...

Yeah, I think about 1055 was what one of the rail guys who knew a thing or two told me. It is good for beating into weird shaped components if you need thicker steel, etc, and will hold a pretty decent hardening. I have made a few striking implements with a couple and they held up fairly well. At this point I just need to make room for some other things!

I checked my settings, should be getting notifications and email from all registered users... If not, click my sig and follow that to my (not very current) google site and email is there, or directly to me at EricLucyCustomKnive@gmail.com.

I have about 30 of these things that can go, and will probably inherit more so if I run out and you just gotta have em, I will keep you in mind...
I also get a crap ton of railroad spikes, some with the coveted HC and others not. Y'all are welcome to these too. I don't use em for much and have a stockpile for the apocalypse anyway ;)
