Free Topo maps??

Does anyone have a source for free topo maps online? I only need a small area... not worth buying a whole map.

Its a bit clunky, but follow the directions and you can get them from the USGS website. Free too, not buying them from them.

You could also try the National Map Viewer. It has topo maps and a good bit more. It's a bit slow, and it's useful.

I did. Some sites were easy to use, others were not. I wanted to get an overall general opinion from the folks here.

topoquest.com has replaced topozone.com.

Topozone.com was bought by another .com and now charges for maps.


Topoquest.com is clunky, but free, and will get better as it gets bigger.

Off one of these, I got a SE topo map that I run on my Garmin 60CSx. So far, it has been spot-on.

Garmins 2005 set of topo maps can be found online (if you are sneaky) and do not have a reg key. They also sell on eBay for about $30
They can be used on a PC and printed out or on a handheld GPS.

I know 2005 seems old but topo does not change that quickly

They also have aerial photos of most areas. I have topo software that I purchased and rarely use the free stuff anymore.
