Free training stock?

Hi all,

I called a local automotive spring maker today and inquired about getting some scraps for learning. Has anyone else done this? If so, did you get decent, annealed 5160 stock?

Michael, I didnt try to find scrap steel, but 5160 isnt the most expensive stuff right out of the mill..

I bought a bar from Adrmiral steel for about 4 bucks a foot, and it is annealed and flat.

I would be woried that I made something I really liked and the stock was not exactly what I wanted or had to take extra steps in order to heat treat it..
