French Press

I've yet to use that Starbucks instant, but you're the first person I've heard give a positive review!

What do you have me on ignore or something???? I've been praising this stuff for two months now! I love it. If it weren't so expensive, I'd consider just not making the real stuff anymore at home.
 
I use a French press every morning at home, and have used mini versions in the field, too. I've also gone so far as to carry a small stove-top espresso maker backpacking and kayaking (GSI, I think).

The new Starbucks instant has converted me, though. It's not as good as the best coffee brewed at home under perfect conditions, but it's certainly on par with anything you can chef up outdoors. It's obviously much lighter, especially when you consider that you don't need extra water for cleanup (this is much more pressing to me when in the SW, where water weight is a major drag).

If you want the press anyway, I'd stick with an insulated/lexan version. A single-walled stainless press seems to me to be a good way to have cold coffee.
 
I have used this press for backpacking, but mine doesn't have the black rubber grip. It is lightweight and durable. Bodum also makes a smaller travel press.
You mentioned that you wanted something to place in the fire, but you may consider using a separate stainless pot for boiling the water and then pouring the water into a press. I think the carry weight should be similar.

silly question, but ill ask it. Since alot of us carry a coffee filter for a prefilter on water, couldnt you boil you coffee, grounds in all, in a say guyot, then pour the coffee/grounds over a filter into a cup? sorry for the silly question..but id honestly like to know

or....

pre fashion a coffee tea bag. ground coffee secured in a coffee filter "packet"...then use like a tea bag...if you could make the packet stay together this could theoritically work...right?

Boiling the grounds makes your coffee bitter, and to get the full flavor out of coffee or tea the grounds need to be in free contact with the water not in a bag. I know it might seem like not that much but I can defintely tell a difference. Chris

My wife has showed me the light. Fresh ground coffee, brewed right is so much better than Mr Coffee brewed maxwell house it is barely the same drink. Chris

I know what you mean! I've been pimping the Starbucks Via for several months now! Many days I don't want to brew a whole pot so these get my necessary caffine hit.

For the field they are the BEST! No muss - No fuss! But then again, no gear either . . . Damn!

If you don't feel like braving the barista line at Starbucks, they sell the little 3-packs at Target, REI, and probably many other stores (it's a flat, 4" envelope package -- often hanging from hooks). Amazon has them online, too.

I'll definitely be buying more. More than good enough for backpacking. I doubt I'd use them at home, but I'll definitely use them at work, where I have an electric teakettle.
 
Speaking of stimulation on the trail one of my favorite things to carry if it isn't too hot is chocolate covered expresso beans.

Say about 4pm and you are getting tired eat a handful of those and you are good to go!

She got into this gourmet coffee crap, I'm not talking about fufu creamer but a grinder, press and whole beans. Started grinding her own and using a press to make it. I'm telling you this stuff is good, so convert I guess I am. I'd never drank anything but commercial coffee, folgers, maxwell house and the like, well the stuff my wife makes now ain't even close to the same thing. Nice and dark and strong without being bitter at all, good stuff.

Man you guys are good, memory like a steel trap, nothing gets by. :o I still enjoy a cuppa tea though. Chris
