"Fresh" Spalted Maple

I know a wood turner who does remarkable work and uses the microwave method. Might be coincidence....I don't remember the process, but his finished work speaks for itself.

Excellent. Does Black Walnut not darken till it gets older or is it always white? Again, the tree is about 20-25 years old.

The walnut tree has an outer layer called sapwood which is white and the inner part -heartwood is the browns and purples. The large commercial mills steam the white so it looks closer to the heartwood during the kiln drying process. A lot of small mills throw the sapwood into the firewood pile. Small mills air dry the walnut. There is a real color difference in air dried (more purplish - darker browns) walnut and kiln dried walnut. A 20 year old walnut tree probably has very little value for a mill. But it you like the way it looks it would make a lot of fine knife handles.
This wood 20140713_093739.jpg~320x480.jpg will not turn the dark brown you think of when you think of walnut.

Here is a picture from the net of the end of a walnut log where you can see the sapwood sapwood.jpg

Lets not rule out the sumac tree. If its not dropping walnuts you might want to look into it. The leaves are VERY similar.

Wowndeye was there any dark brown colored wood at all in the piece of wood you cut the piece in the pictures from ? If not is there a chance it is an ash tree? I am not real good at reading the leaves but an ash leaf is close also and the wood could pass for ash to me.

Edit: you posted a few pictures on the bottom of page 1 of the leaves and the tree but you actually posted the leaves in both pictures ..... Do you have a good picture of the bark?
