Hey guys. Got a question. I found a spool of 330 yd 6lb sufix elite at walmart last night for just under 8$. Great deal seeing as how its usually twice that. So I bought it. I'm still spooled up with 8lb spiderwire supermono xxx on my spinning reel (6lb diameter). If anybody has tried either of these, which one comes out on top as far as tensile strength and knot strength? I tie all kinds of knots, not just one. I use powerpro on my low profile baitcaster, i hate mono on them. So this will just be strictly spinning reel line. I fish for bass, pickerel and trout. I will mainly use my baitcaster when bass fishing, but where i go i have to walk through the woods so sometimes i'll bring one, or both. I like fishing plastics and smaller rapalas on my spinning rod even though i can cast them on my baitcaster. Anyways, what do you guys think about these two lines? I fished the spiderwire supermono ez and xxx last year and they work amazing, but people always rave about suffix.

i have 3 reels with spiderwire and i have had large bass pull the line off the hooks even with a knot tied in the end of the line. i have tried several knots and none hold. i found out that i can tie 2 knots in the end of the line which holds a little better. i know when i'm ready to respool it wont be with spiderwire. make a post to let us know how the other line works.

for lightweight lines on spin tackle it's hard to beat trilene x-tra limp. the braided supers like power pro on my curado or magnesium cronarch take very careful knot tying on the 20 to 30 lb. test.--dennis

I've tried tons of lines. I actually really like the spiderwire. It has memory though, which is why i wanted to try the sufix. But, i still have a spool of spiderwire and a reel full of it. Richard, try a palomar for your standard knot, and for rapalas, the rapala knot does hold. You just have to wet it and give it a decent tag end until the line pulls into itself. Also, cinch it down with your fingers. I was pulling logs out of the water (yes, LOGS) with 10lb supermono ez.

The Palamar knot is your friend Richard. It will not pull out with braid, at least it hasn't with me.

I thought he was talking about what i listed, the mono. lol. Yeah for braid palomar is the best knot. Or, what i'll do is tie an alberto knot to connecting a decent length of mono to the braid, because sometimes i like having the mono on there for certain applications. It's also nice to be able to use different sized leaders but have the braid on there for most of my fishing. Just remember, if you're using #50 braid and #20 mono, the weak point is your mono, so don't go pulling on it like you would with the braid. I do this trick a lot when fishing live bait for sunnies or for plastics and rapalas, but i also use it in salt water for a shock leader.

I tried Spyderwire and didn't care for it. Fireline is all I have used for years. When I need stretch in the line, I'll add a mono leader.

I bought some 12 lb suffix Elite last year and only used it a couple of times, but I was very impressed with it. It seemed to be limp and strong. Casted great. ill get a better feel for it this year , as soon as it warms up.

Been wanting to start a 2011 fishing thread, its just been to dang windy and cold on weekends.

I was going to go out and start bass season for me here today, probably just jigs and slow plastics. It's about 52 here right now. I'm debating stripping the spiderwire off and using the suffix, or saving the suffix until i need it later.

i have tried palomar knots and variations of it. a buddy who gave it to me tried every knot he knew and had the same results.

Man, you guys are killing me . . . . :)
My son and I stripped off the line from our baitcasters yesterday, tore them apart & oiled them, cleaned the cork handles on the rods, & cleaned the guides & inserts. Today it is 29*, rain, flooding everywhere, & now snow showers tonight thru tomorrow afternoon . . . .:grumpy:
Spring is never going to get here. I, like Dipbait, tried the Suffix Elite last year in my Diawa Zillion baitcasters and was pretty impressed. I have used the Suffix braid for the last 3-4 years & have actually noticed an increase in the casting distance with it. I use the 50# test, which I think is either 14# or 17# dia. I got a couple of my friends to try it and they both have switched to it. I just bought some of the new Trilene fluorocarbon this year, but have not had a chance to try it yet, just looking forward to being able to go outside without a poncho or umbrella for awhile . . . .
Good luck to everyone this year, post some pictures of your outings.
Be safe.

Lately ive been using seaguar abrazx florocarbon on my abu garcia baitcaster and seaguar invisx on my spinning reel, and the stuff is amazing. Ive tried the sufix elite and didnt like it as much as the siege

I couldn't agree more. I don't want to sound like a fanboy, but I really do think Fireline is head over heels the best line for a freshwater spinning rod (at least for me). Strong as braid, but so thin/sensitive and unbelievably smooth. Doesn't have any memory or curve to your spool over time, either. You can find this stuff almost anywhere, try some out if you haven't.

Fireline doesnt work well for me. I like some stretch. Been fishing mono for too long and am use to it.

I have to say I have used fireline for many years like Handwrecker has on trout and smallmouth and really like it for my spinning rod

Most of my rods are spooled with Stren Super Braid. By far the best braid I've ever used. I don't know why they quit making it. I buy bulk spools on ebay when I can find them.

I use leaders with my braid, but not for stretch or shock resistance. Mono stretches 10-20%. If your leader is 2 feet long you're only getting a couple of inches of stretch at the most, and it's not enough to give any shock resistance.

The best way to get some shock resistance with braid is fish a rod that is a bit more flexible. Since there's no stretch in braid, you don't need a stiff rod to get a good hook set. Stiffer rods were developed to help overcome the stretch in mono, for good sets and better sensitivity. Another thing to do is to set the drag a bit lighter with braid.

For mono, my favorites are Stren Clear/Blue (old standby) and P-Line CX in clear blue. Stren has NEVER failed me in any way and you can get it any where. I actually like the P-Line better though. It's very limp, little memory, and thinner diameter than comparable strength lines. 15lb CX has the same diameter as 10 or 12 lb lines from Stren and Trilene.

Double the line when tying knots in braid and there'll be no slippage. I tie a double palomar in my braid and I've never had one fail. I broke a 50lb Shimano spring scale trying to measure the breaking point of 40lb Stren Super Braid that I tied with a double palomar. The line and the scale broke but the knot didn't slip.

Another trick is to put a drop of super glue on the knot. Only takes a second to dry and stops knots from slipping.

I use the Spiderwire EZ Mono XXX on all my spinning gear. I love it. I have used both Suffix Elite and Siege, and while I liked both, I always go back to the Spiderwire.

Bump.

Sorry for the zombie thread, but I was going to ask what mono line everyone likes for a spinning reel and found this thread. Wanted to see how the OP like the Suffix Elite vs the Spiderwire.

I used Spiderwire EZ Mono last year, but was thinking of going with either Trilene XL or Suffix Elite.
