Talfuchre: Thanks for the vids! They ought to be a big help!

Seriously, you guys are the greatest! :D

Sorry for the lack of an update! I've just been really busy getting some wedding stuff together. :D

I've successfully made my first couple of coals, but need to review how to properly make a tinder bundle. It was like "Ok...here's the coal...what now?" :) The hearth board and spindle helped out a ton--SO much easier than the overly hard wood I was trying before.

As a question, though, do you have any tips on preventing the hole on the hearth board from splitting? I had one bust out on me, and it looked as though one had done it to you at some point--the stuff is just so straight-grained and soft! I feel more confident in my ability to get a coal going provided if I have suitably soft wood.

I'll try to take pictures soon--I've just hardly had any time to play!

Thanks again, Tony! You're a real champ!

Awesome bro, CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

Yeah I busted out a few holes before, I am far from a pro.... I think I was just using too much downward force and slightly off angle when it broke.

Just get some jute twine and make a lil nest for your tinder bundle.

I just had my first success! I used a bunch of pine needles to make the bundle. I'll start a new thread with pics once they get done uploading to Photobucket. :D
