Friction Folder by Mykulmorris

Great knife FLymon. What is the wait time btw?

A friction folder works with simply friction. The blade is held in position because the handles are pressing against it creating the friction. To close, you simply slide the blade closed. Pretty much a locking folder without the lock and a tighter pivot.

thank you for the explanation.

those are good looking i love how you can still see the file's profile on the knife, i never owned one of these style of knives before. so i'm wondering when the blades open how does it shut do you just push down on the blade or is there another way i'm assuming you just push down on the blade.

Quite an attractive knife! But I am not sure I am familiar with the concept of a friction folder. Would you mind enlightening me on some specifics? Thanks!

The knife has no spring like you find in a slipjoint and uses just the friction between the blade and the handles to stay open (and closed). The tang sticks out when it is closed giving you some leverage to start the blade opening, and when fully open it contacts the stop pin (closest to the pivot) to keep the blade from over opening. When closed the stop pin contacts the choil. And yes, you just push down on the blade to close it. It takes a little getting used to, the force required that is, but once you open and close it a few times it is very natural to do.
I don't think Michael is the only guy turning the tang into a bottle opener, but he does it right. It's got a nice sharp lip and really grabs the cap.

That might be better talked about directly with Michael. PM sent.

Jani, that is a slick little folder. I like it a lot. And it's not expensive for a custom knife. Thanks for posting. I believe I need one of those myself. Not sure why I need one, but I'm pretty sure I do.

That Wharncliffe blade model with the natural handles just suckers me right in.

Do these little knives have liners or no? I was unable to tell on the website or just didn't look close enough.

That's the spirit!

+1 to that! I'd love the same setup. I don't believe they have liners though.

Very, very nice. Loving the simple, yet elegant design. The only thing aesthetically that I would think would make it better, would be a little better blade to handle ratio. However, I understand because of the pin placement that's as good as it gets on this knife. Certainly wouldn't stop me from carrying/using/admiring one, though, just random online nitpickings :p

Boy! FLymon, riz aaroni, you guys are no help! :D

Lol, threads like these don't help anyone. I discovered another great knife via this one and another way to spend my dinero. Though seriously, I certainly have found another great knife/maker.

Thanks for the explanations folks, the info is greatly appreciated.

No problemo. Definitely a lot of information to be had on here.

I like that Ivory Micarta, a favourite handle material.

Interesting to see the remnants of the file left on the spine, a nice touch showing its origins. How about the steel, is it brittle? Probably not if you can open beer bottles with it!
Nice knife indeed.

its not brittle at all. I've been using mine to open bottles without problem. Its W2 or similar industrial carbon steel they make files out of it. Very nice steel. I'll hope I can get another next year. This time with Natural micarta handles or Ivory micarta.

Very nice. A Morris Friction Folder has been on my want list since I first saw them here on BF. I've never had a custom before, this may be my first! I want black micarta with a drop point blade.

Thanks for showing your new Morris friction folder Jamppa, I had no idea Michael was making folders. I have 2 fixed edc's from him that are great one for myself and one I gave to my father as a bday present (he loved it).

I ordered one of his friction folders today with a pocket slip sheath...can't wait.

how is that steel with staining? will it stain as easily as 1095? or maybe hold up a little better like other high carbon, non stainless knives?

The files are not stainless steel, so neither are the knives. I think the files he uses are typically W1 or W2 steel. I keep a light coating of mineral oil on mine and so far no rust at all. I expect it to patina over time though.

Mine has started to get patina after using mine cutting potatoes and such. Rust is no issue if you take care of them like carbon steel blades need to.
