Friction Folder Design Criticism

Hey guys,

I'm playing with Solidworks again. For my project in school I am supposed to make an assembly of something with many parts, so I decided to design a friction folder that I might try to make in the future.

Any glaring issues?

The tang is a bit pointy with no real need to be. I can see that shredding a pocket if left that shape.

I also wonder if that forefinger curve is a bit small in radius to be comfy? (depends on overall size really)

These were my first thoughts as well.

Awesome, thanks for the thoughts. I completely glazed over the tang when I was making it - I'll change that up. I'll have to play with that radius too to see how it feels.

Looks like you could afford to use a bit long blade or shorter handles. Also looks like quite a bit of blade will be exposed when closed. The exposed point on the spine of the blade would also be a pocket eater if not rounded.

Hey Don,
Just a thought, try an epoxy coated thin cord or leather cord wrap on the pointy tang part. Would give a unique look and serve a purpose too. Solidworks is pretty great at this, I too have been learning it making a couple friction folder models, fun stuff.

Looking good, I like your style Don.

I can only think of a couple of things that might improve the function of the design.

How big is it? It might be big enough for these points to not really matter...

If you drop the pivot a hair when it is open it will give you more room for the blade when closed. It might be a bit close on the choil/ricasso area when closed.

For the finger radius 1" will work well.

Check to see of the washers you need are available or if some will fit.

I've never made a folder but my thought if you like it:
A friction folder has a tang sticking out. Might as well give it a use.
Give it a bottle opener shape of a (flat) screw driver shape
