Hello everyone! I'm about to embark on my first friction folder. I won't have time to heat treat so I ordered some TI for the blade. Just looking for any critiques on the design or any advice on making my first folder and working with TI. I have 1x30 HF and a 4x36 hf together they seem to solve most problems. My biggest challenge I think is the lack of a drill press, but I might be able to get access to one we shall see.

I forgot to mention the size its's quite small. Overall is about 5-1/4" and blade about 2"

Make cereal box cardboard cutouts of the blade and handle as separate pieces

Then fiddle around with a thumbtack to find your pivot centre points.

Why won't you have time to heat treat?

Honestly Ti sucks at cutting compared to any steel.

No drill press, no HT, no time, Titanium? Sounds like a recipe for problems to me.

You will need a way to drill clean and precise holes. Titanium isn't all that easy to shape, and makes a poor blade.

If there are problems with finding time to heat treat (which I find hard to believe)
Just send it out for heat treat.

Sorry for the confusion with the heat treat thing. Right now I'm away at college and will only have a few days to work on it during thanksgiving break so I wouldn't be able to send it out for HT and get it back in time for when I go back to school. If the knife were just for me that'd be fine I'd just wait till winter break to finish it but I plan to give this to someone for their birthday. I hope that makes sense now. I can probably get access to a drill press because as good as my hand drill is I don't think I'll get the holes perfect. This knife is a small edc kind of thing so I don't think TI is a problem at least with grinding the bevel and edge retention. Im sure it will be a pain around the tang I'm sure. I've checked with a compass and protractor that the blade will move and sit in the handle properly then I used tracing paper and drew the open and close positions seems to fit like a dream. Thanks for the tip about the card stock I will definately use that. The one advantage I have is plently of time for planing. You guys have made me think a bit what if I only use the TI blade as a temporary blade ande make a duplicate blade out of 1084. Then during winter break I'll finish the 1084 blade and fit it in the old handles maybe that'll be to much work and should just make about her knife at that point? What do you guys think? Thank you for pointing the flaws out it truly helps and may just make this possible
