Friction folder

I'm making a friction folder. I split a muley tine for the handle. I need input as to whether to use some type of a washer between the blade and antler, or nothing.

A washer is not needed. The contact of the blade against the antler is part of the "friction" in friction folder. It is common to have to tighten up again after a year or so. They sort of break in, but after one or two adjustments, they seem to level off and no more adjusting is needed. In my experience anyway. If kept in a dry environment, the antler will likely shrink and be loose, but once back in a normal atmospere, it will swell back.

Scott,I make alot of them and most of the time don't use washers. On some of the nicer Damascus models I have made some washers out of stainless shim stock (.003") .This keeps the etch from getting marred. I also use bronze bushings on my pivot.Dave:)

Well, I got my first friction folder done. I found several design flaws, but put it together anyhow. Forged from 3/8" round stock 0-1, the blade is just under 3" long.

Looks pretty good. I take it you used a brass pin for a stop pin like in a linner lock?
