I drove down to Atlanta with Keith Johnson and we talked about a project I'd been thinking about. I've been seeing a few makers doing modern friction folders and I thought with the economy the way it is, it might be a good thing to make a more affordable folder and it has the added benefit of being legal in the UK. We decided we could work on them together to produce a good sized batch of them.

I designed the knife and sent the drawings to Keith, right now we are each working on prototypes and we have the 1st batch of 20 blades waterjet cut and I'm in the process of heat treating them now. I'm not sure how many proto's Keith is working on but I have 3 of them going and this is the 1st one I've finished. We will be using ATS-34 but we are each using what we have available in the shop for the prototypes, I've used CPM154. The final design only varies slightly from this one and it's not noticeable.

The specs are:

Blade - Stone washed, 3.05", 1/8" CPM154 (2.98" sharpened)
Handle - Black/tan G-10, 2x2.
Closed - 3.9 not including tang (4.7" with tang)
Overal - 6.95"
Pivot - 1/8 barrel pivot
Other - No washer, handles are relieved around tang.

Price - $200 + $8 USPS Priority insured shipping (ConUS) $12 international priority to UK and most other countries.

Shipping note: Overseas shipping is NOT insured and the buyer assumes responsibility. FedEx shipping is available and can be insured but buyer must pay the actual FedEx shipping cost if you chose this shipping method.

Les,

Nice looking modern interpretation on a friction folder!

May I ask what 2x2 refers to in the description on the scales?

Thanks Ken.

Sorry, I should have explained that. 2x2 refers to the layering in the G-10, so it's double layers of tan and double layers of black.

Thanks Les,

I thought that maybe the case but did not want to stick my foot in my mouth-again!:foot: :D

Yes it is attractive, but i wonder if there is enough interest among us knife knuts for these to be a "big seller".

I don't know how much interest there will be amongst collectors But, I have one ordered that will have 416 SS scales & a damascus blade. I intend on gold bordering the scales & engraving the scales in full coversge banknote scroll with gold inlayed leaves intersperced with the steel cut leaves. Also, the background between the leaves will be relieved about .015" and then stipples. Might not be something a collector would want but, I would. But, then again, I'm probably biased. Come on Mr. Les, I'm chomping at the bit & can't wait to get on this sweetie. Best regards all, Ken

very nice! what kind of grind on the blade for the final pieces?

Hollow ground.

I don't know about "big seller", no one has picked up either of the protos yet and I told Keith I was a little worried about it but we are going to finish the 1st 20 (+ a couple that are going to Ken for engraving) and I should have a half dozen ready for the A.G. Russell show and I guess we'll see if they sell or not.

Les---I think the Frickies will catch on. Give it time. Friction Folders are big in Europe. I love mine!
good luck.

Les great knife. You should post them at British Blades, they eat em up as fast as people can make them due to the no locking laws.
