Friction Forged....

I'm sure alot of us have seen the articles in the magazines about Diamond Blade's new "friction forged" blades. Wayne Goddard did some testing and had some very interesting results with remarkable edge holding and abuse tolerance. Also, talking about the grain size in the D-2 they were referencing grain sizes around 0.5 microns at the edge vs. a 5 micron size throughout the steel. Sounds like some pretty impressive numbers.

I know that friction forging is a spin off of stir welding, but I was wondering if any of you guys have had a hands on with these blades or had any insight into the metallurgical properties/benefits of the knife. Seems like a great step in the right direction.

Do a search...there are several threads about this topic already and I know at least one was started but someone who bought one.

Sorry bout that. :D I did a quick search and didn't come up with anything. Guess I didn't use enough key words. I'll try again when I get some time and if the dang search button works at the time.

Been reading the posts above. Sorry again about the needless topic. My intial searches yielded no results. Not sure why. Perhaps I'm retarded and mispelled something. :D

Not needless at all. Someone will always help you find what you are looking for.

thanks for the link i was wandering ow long it would take to see something about this here online

looks from what I read like they are doing the equivalent of pushing as hard as possible o n a dull drill rod in a strong drill press at high speed untl the whole mess gets reddish hot, the carbides are fractured and the whole mess is work hardened. :-)

-Kevin? what is your opinion?

Nathan, the search engines on the various forums are not great. If you can't find what you want, you might have better luck by using Google to search. You can enter "BladeForums" along with your other search words if you need to narrow the field.

I don;t get the difference between this and regular forging.
Sam, I have the dubious honor to be one of the first to have procured a Diamondblade Goddard in FFD2. If you'd like, I'll bring it with me on Saturday to the Pumpkinfest. BUT,
1. You can't put it in your forge, to "make it better." :D
2. No knife destruction tests. :D......you have to be nice to it.

thanks troop for showing up here i read the thread and well i didnt get much out of it

No, Bro. No more usage...Just cut thirty pieces of hemp rope; still hair poppin'
sharp. Took the backstraps out of deer, still poppin' hairs, then stropped it on a leather belt w/ white compound just to keep it that way. A few days later, Vassili was breakin' my balls about splitting a hair with it...I guess it was important to him, for some reason. So, I got it out, didn't do anything further to the blade, i.e., didn't put my "magic touch' on it or anything on it, and split a hair with it....Of course, that wasn't good enough for him. He wanted to know the depth and type of split, etc.
I'm pretty (extremely) impressed with this thing, ref. edge retention, although, I haven't "put it through the paces" yet. (Haven't gotten any more deer....yet. :D)
