on friday afternoon i took about an hour and wandered around the woods behind my house with a daypack.
i found this neat ledge type thing on the side of a fairly steep rock formation and set up camp on it for the sake of practice. i lounged around and did a trial run of my pop can stove to make sure its still working well, then packed up and headed back here. just thought i would share some pics.
the place:
oops, i get there and realize i left the goody bag with stakes and lines back home...luckily i was able to scrounge enough cord to rig my tarp up. a stip of t-shirt from my repair kit, a length of paracord from my pocket, a longer piece of paracord from my general kit, and a length of high-vis paracord from my CS kukri.
rigged the tarp up:
laid out my blanket and lounged:
i set up my stove with my billycan and had some water nearly-rolling-boiling in a few minutes. the fuel ran out right as it was at the edge, but the water was plenty hot to make a hot drink or some kind of soup:
you can see from the orange speck that i should have cleared the ground a little better, but it turned out fine.
all packed up and ready to go home. by the way, i timed myself just for kicks, and discovered it took me right about 4 minutes to go from sitting in my shelter watching my water to having everything packed up and ready to head out. low impact, too:
just thought i would share.
also, in relation to the "unconventional/low vis shelters" thread, this spot would be difficult for the casual hiker to spot either from above or below, and they would be unlikely to walk by it as it is in a rather unconvenient spot to get to without doing a little bit of climbing or dropping, depending on approach angle.
