on friday afternoon i took about an hour and wandered around the woods behind my house with a daypack.

i found this neat ledge type thing on the side of a fairly steep rock formation and set up camp on it for the sake of practice. i lounged around and did a trial run of my pop can stove to make sure its still working well, then packed up and headed back here. just thought i would share some pics.

oops, i get there and realize i left the goody bag with stakes and lines back home...luckily i was able to scrounge enough cord to rig my tarp up. a stip of t-shirt from my repair kit, a length of paracord from my pocket, a longer piece of paracord from my general kit, and a length of high-vis paracord from my CS kukri.

laid out my blanket and lounged:

i set up my stove with my billycan and had some water nearly-rolling-boiling in a few minutes. the fuel ran out right as it was at the edge, but the water was plenty hot to make a hot drink or some kind of soup:

you can see from the orange speck that i should have cleared the ground a little better, but it turned out fine.

all packed up and ready to go home. by the way, i timed myself just for kicks, and discovered it took me right about 4 minutes to go from sitting in my shelter watching my water to having everything packed up and ready to head out. low impact, too:

just thought i would share.

also, in relation to the "unconventional/low vis shelters" thread, this spot would be difficult for the casual hiker to spot either from above or below, and they would be unlikely to walk by it as it is in a rather unconvenient spot to get to without doing a little bit of climbing or dropping, depending on approach angle.

forgot to mention that i intend to get back there this week sometime for a night or two of low-key bush sleeping...

i will have to figure out something to do about the bugs though, the mosquitos were terrible. maybe i will get one of those mosquito net-boxes that you can rig up...

That is a nice set-up. Wouldn't have though you could put it up that quick - but it helps to have found those logs so nicely placed! Yeah - not sure I'd want to sleep on unprotected ground during the height of bug season!

Its great to get out there and practice isnt it? I love my 1-2 hour jaunts into the woods. Just enough to feel good about it. Gene

kgd-i couldn't have planned to have them there if i tried. it was actually a large tree with a stump maybe twenty feet away with a large fork in it, and when it fell (i assume quite a time ago...maybe ten years?) it happened to fall just right to provide a secure place for me to sleep.

gene, it is a fine feeling to get out to clear your head for a bit in the woods...

That's a prime spot you have there. Thanks for the pictures. I can see lots of oak and maple, so the woods wouldn't let you go hungry. You mentioned the "skeeters" were pretty thick, but how's the poison ivy? In one picture it looked like you could have had some just on the other side of that log, which is what bought it to mind. Do you pack anything in your FAK for poison ivy, or it not a big deal? Thanks.

littlehairy,
my FAK is a tube of super glue and a roll of cloth medical tape...so no poison ivy stuff.

i haven't seen too much poison ivy around here so far this year, and i don't react too too badly usually...it isn't a real problem, just an annoyance. i suppose i could use some of the denatured alcohol for my stove to help dry up the blisters if i did get it though...

Sounds like you need an Equinox Mantis Mosquito Net.

They are a life saver. The one I got from the same company was black. I don't know if that is standard although the one in the picture looks white.
