Friend in the Marines, Needs a knife

The USMC Kabar is an obsolete mass production bare minimum knife with poor quality steel and a grind that won't take a very sharp edge.

I could write 3 pages to refute your statement, but I have work to do.

By the way, I know I posted back in August, and I still do like the Nighthawk, but I'd go with a Rat Cutlery RC6, RC5, or Becker BK7 (less expensive of the 3)

Lots of good suggestions here. I agree that he should have a multitool, folder and a fixed blade.

For a fixed blade I'd got with a Busse. INFI steel is very corrosion resistant (more so than even D2) and will hold an edge longer than any knife I've ever owned (over 2700 cuts on 1" manilla rope in a live demonstration at Blade). The durability of the steel is simply amazing and it can hold up to the hard-use it will likely see from a young Marine. It carries a lifetime warranty as well... just in case.

I am seeing alot of posts for a fixed blade. although it would be nice the odds that the upper NCO's or CO's will allow you to wear it when not going out on patrol or something is unlikely. Its considered not part of the uniform. They issue you the ontario bayonet which is a fixed blade. So if he is looking for something to carry around all the time look into a bomb proof folder and a multi tool. Something that can be carried but nto seen that much. Other wise he will get shit from alot of people for wearing a fixed blade . Just something to think about. He should prob have a knife that he will use consistlatly and always have in the same spot so when he need sit its second nature.

If you look again I rephrased that. I'd like to get a new Kabar and put it to the test. The only one I've ever handled was old, abused, dull, and falling apart.

Ka Bar D2 Impact Spear Point, this comes with the excellent Eagle Sheath.

Forget the big fixed-blade.
Instead get a good multi-tool and a Spyderco Pacific Salt.

i dunno just how much you're willing to blow on this friend's SD gift; but considering the circumstance of just how messy living conditions might get the next day... may i suggest two shivs (like CS's dawson spikes) for each boot and a small hide-away or neck knife elsewhere. combat knife/bayonet would probably be issued in any event.

Thought of another one, Benchmade 158 CSK II. I'd say that's like a modern Ka-Bar, but made with Benchmade quality.

Depending on his load out weight, something like a Seal Pup elite (which I have and love) is a good choice. Maybe a Cold steel SRK or If he's carrying A LOT of stuff, maybe even a folder. A good tactical folder might a SOG aegis in Digital camo either tanto or drop point or a RAT Izula for a smaller fixed blade.
