Friend made a Video

Cool video Ryan! I like that knife at ~ 6:00.

Can you tell me about the lamp you have attached to your KMG? (I've not been able to find a good solution for my setup, and I think yours would work perfect for me.

Paul,
It is one of the cheap lamps you can get at any store: Shopko, Walmart etc... with the cheap plastic cover over the felxible part, I just took it apart and drilled a hole through my Platen attachment. I cut the plug off and slid the cord through the hole then attached an aftermarket Plug. Hope this makes sense.

Ryan, are you constantly changing attachments, or is this grinder semi-dedicated?

Great video. I like how you filed your jimping. I've never thought of using the triangle file to start the groove before using the round file. That sure will save me some headache in the future!

I saw that as well, Jason, but it looks to me like Ryan was cutting the serrations with the file. It would surely work for gimping as well. please somebody, correct me if I am wrong.

Yep you are correct Erik, I do both the same way... and I dont have a dedicated anything. I use the same arm for everything, I should probably break down and get a few spares.

I think he did a great job. I would love to hear your thoughts.
Ryan

Video is a pretty important aspect of marketing now.
I've got nothing, so it's automatically better than mine. :)

I watched it a couple of times.

Well, you can't please everyone, and it's easy for me to nitpick.
Let me put some stuff out there

It's on Vimo and I have turned off HD, but it still loads super slow for me.
On Youtube I know how to change setting way down so I can have it load quickly.

Within the first few seconds it has a feel VERY similar to that guy in New York / Brooklyn
and maybe you want to differentiate yourself from that.

Within the first 30 seconds there is your voice over and music at the same time.
It makes is really hard for me to understand you.

I'm sure people with worse hearing have more trouble.
Same at 3:30 -4:30 good nostalgia story but music and voice over at the same time.

4:22 I hear "messing with you " as an echo
If that's your video guy talking to you, I would cut out his voice in that clip and just keep yours.
Keep the illusion that we are there listening to you.

Some here like that music.
I don't completely hate it, but I don't really care for it.
It's a Snody-ism I want to watch interesting videos, but the music has the ability to drive me away from them.
No matter what music you use you will offend somebody.

Don't limit who will be attacted to your knives to those that have the same musical tastes as you do.

I know that the framing, zoom and focus changing is supposed to be artistic, I don't care for that.
No practical purpose...
The video shots and cuts are already very short and quickly paced.
I'd rather just see what you are doing in sharp focus.
Like when you are grinding, the workpiece is not always focused and that is where you want to draw the viewers attention to.

Why some grinding with a proper respirator and some with the paper mask?

If this is a sales tool, Wiping on your shirt ?
Not professional & some women or others will just HATE that .

Pat's right, your vise really rattles.

Check the spelling and grammar on that text.
Withstood instead of stood?

"Lossing" ? Probably need to lose an "s"

Check the last sentence - it's just awkward somehow.
It's a sentence fragment and maybe person or tense, or possessives change or something ?
instead of "A tool"
maybe use "It is a tool that has...."

Numbers.... I didnt make the video! Thanks for your input, I will pass it all on

Edit: I would like to buy one of your knives, where can I find one?

Was there at least one thing you DID like? It would have been nice to mention at least one nice thing considering the amount of nit picking going on here.

If I can say just one thing......of all the complaints you had with it, really....the shirt wiping? If this video was supposed to be simply a look into what goes on in Ryan's shop then let's be real. We all wipe off grit, dust, grime, grease, oil, etc on our shop clothes. What do you want him to do, get out some sanitary wipes with his grimy black crusted hands? C'mon numbers, it's a shop video. Anyone who works in a shop making knives has wiped stuff off on his clothes. You may disagree with me, but personally I don't think that qualifies as a shop faux pas. You really went all out trying to tear this apart.

Don't get bent, it's not malicious.
I already labelled my comments as nitpicking.
Some things jump right out at me, maybe others don't see it.

I did say that it is a good step in marketing
I think that the found folder story is the gold nugget, that's something that folks will connect to and remember.

550 views and all he got was "good video"
He asked for opinions and I assumed that fair critique was appropriate.
I would love to hear your thoughts.
Ryan

Sure I wipe my hands on my clothes, but if I had hours of video to distil into seven and a half minutes of marketing video that part wouldn't make it into the final product.

Especially with all the short fast cuts,
the shirt wiping scene at maybe 9 seconds long seemed like the longest uninterrupted scene in the video.
That gives it emphasis.

Ryan makes nice knives, good design, nice flow.
I think that part should have the greatest emphasis.

The video should be at least as good as Ryan's own work

I could have just said "nice video" but how would that have helped ?

I loved the video. I have a video guy who wants to capture what I do. I sent him the link of your video for reference, Ryan. He had a problem with the link, but that may be better. He's really good and I would not want him to try and reproduce what you got there. (That's the best 7 min knife video I have seen). If we make it, I think it will be similar in ways, because he's artsy and shit. Jon, I don't think 55 means to slam the vid, he just prefers tutorials. But, I do wipe my knives on my shirt all day long, that's why I wear them. Most accessible rag ever.

12345... I appreciate you taking the time to watch the video and critique the style, content and "Marketability" This is not a marketing video, I agree this would not make everyone say "Damn where Can I get one of those knives". A friend asked it he could take some time in my shop and put a little video together. He did not have "Hours" of footage, he used what he had. The last thing I wanted was a video that said I am Ryan Weeks Buy my knives, cause they rock. He just wanted to give people a quick look into my shop.

I like the video especially from someone that has no knife making experience, to show an interest in what I do. He didn't have the Audio plug pushed all the way in during the part where I told the folding knife story, it was in Mono. He was upset about it, but this was just for fun.

Fair enough, I can appreciate that it wouldn't make it into your video. It did make it into his though and I don't see anything wrong with that. It would have made it into mine too, and probably many other makers.

In my very honest opinion, I think the grittiness of the making process.....the dirt, the grease, sweat, sparks, steam, etc. actually is a good thing. I think it makes people appreciate the end product even more. The guy's in this shed, hunched over machinery, sparks flyin', steel dust all over the place, on his hands, face, and in his eyes. You get sweat dripping down cheeks, your covered up with some kind of respirator, whatever. You have that moment where you've been putting your all into a grind and you want to see what you've got......so what do you do? Get up and walk across the shop for some detergent and a paper towel? No. You wipe that sucker off on your sleeve or pant leg and check it out ASAP. That's knife making, that's real, and that's how WE do it. No sense in pretending that things are more refined or sanitary than that.

...and that is just how I feel about it.

As far as your sentence that you "could have just said 'nice video' but how would that have helped?"........well, I may be reading too much into it, and typed words are often difficult to interpret accurately, but to me your tone was condescending, not helpful. your bedside manner could use at least as much work as Ryan's video.

Sorry if I seem to be taking your comments personally, but we're discussing something near and dear to my heart, so my reactions might be a bit passionate.

Thanks Erik I really appreciate that, you posted while I was trying to fix some (Not all) of my grammar issues!

The ladies control more than half the money in the world, why offend them if you don't have to?
My experience is ladies dig it when it someone elses man, and Hate it when it is theirs... Sales to ladies is up

Ryan makes nice knives, good design, nice flow.
I think that part should have the greatest emphasis.

I appreciate that! Thank you

I could have just said "nice video" but how would that have helped ?
Would have made me feel goods Feel Good! ;)

I really liked the video.

Quick, and showed a few stages of the process. Do you send them out for heat treat? If not, that would be a great thing to show as well, especially with a differential heat treat.

I really liked the story about your "first knife", and the knife you could not open. I bought my 6 year old his first knife. It is a GEC made Scharade trapper, and he might be able to open it in a few years when his nails get harder.......maybe. So I bought him a Opinel with no spring!

My favorite part was the choice of the music, and the shots of the knives on the vests. The combo of the music and what looked like a river knife on a vest made me want to bust out my white water canoe and to paddling!

That sound track reminded me of an extreme white water kayak video. I think it was perfect.

You need to go over to J. Oeser's little shop and film him with some sweet music, in his fancy pants! Tell him I said so!

You may not consider it as a marketing video, but EVERYTHING with your name on it will reflect on you good or bad.

The video should be at least as good as the work you do.

550 views and no one even mentioned the spelling mistakes in the text ?

Aesthetics of the video style aside, that kind of thing can bite you in the arse.

I can appreciate that Numbers. I went back and watched the video again with your comments in mind, while I get what you are saying on most points. I wouldn't change anything from fear of what someone might think when I wipe a blade on my shirt or wear a Paper Mask. It is not always about selling more knives.

The spelling is another issue, and I agree. To be honest I did not notice the "Lossing" until you mentioned it. as far as the text and content within the text, It got me a little Verklempt the first time I watched it!

I'll say it again, what I took out of this video is that it is a glimpse/snapshot into a man doing something he truly loves to do. Marketing aside, this makes me confident that he's building a product, not because he has to to make a buck, but because he's dedicated to it and will therefore make each one with special care and attention. I don't get that from a slick commercial. My $.02.
