friend needs a hollowed handle survival knife for less than $50

Well hollow handles didn't start with rambo but much earlier. Randall made lots of them for guys in Vietnam, and there are many really well made ones available still. Your not going to get those for 8 bucks at harbor freight though lol. The cheap knock offs from the rambo movies gave many a false impression of there strengths though.

I keep a fire steel and scraper and some kevlar cord in the ones I use hunting and camping.

I think that what he meant is that it became really popular especially for non knife people with the Rambo movie, but indeed Randall made hollow handle knives earlier, i'm with you on this. Ask a non knife person what a fighting knife is, they are surely going to anwser a ''Rambo Knife'', as they are not as educated as you, me, and the entire knife nut community. So on to the choice. I had as a young poor guy a lot of hollow handle blades, only thing I could buy, no mora's around. Personnally I think they are scrap, i'm a fixed blade guy. But there are high end ones like the Randall that I would look into if I were interested in buying one. But for 50$, the Schrade would be my choice. For 50$ I think you can't go wrong with this blade. And with a Altoid tin fishing kit in the pouch, he would be ready to go. Remove the nylon cordage and put on some paracord. All set... for 50$.

Yeah I agree that the schrade is the best choice for the money, if he went a bit higher the Boker Apparo is a good solid knife, I've beat on one pretty hard. The cheap ones are nothing but scrap, however that doesn't mean that makers don't make good solid ones that you aren't going to break easily. I had a lile in the 80s and it was a very well made solid knife. There are a number of custom makers who do a first rate job now, Martin, Wilson, Randall and Neely are just a few. There are also the older Chris Reeve knives all good solid blades, just nowhere near the Op's price point.

Boker Apparo gets another vote, but within the stated price range it would be the Schrades.

I don't own the Schrade but I've handled one. It's not bad, and I realize the Schrade name is not what it used to be. But I think hollow handled knives nowadays are like a 96 hour virus, it comes on you for awhile, then your immune system rallies and you get over it. Maybe $8 from Harbor Freight then passing it on to some younger cousin is a way to have fun and get off cheap.
