i just picked up a lava today. i really love the design of this blade. only problem is i dont like steel handles as they are slippery. this knife is awesome, i think an FRN version with steel liners would be even better. just my 2 cents.....what you guys think??

I think it would ruin the knife.

I think the only thing that should be considered is the etching done on the dragonfly and the cricket.

Like all my other SS handle knives, I find the Lava is just too heavy for the amount of cutting edge it gives me. I carried it for a while (just like all the other SS handles), then put it back in its box and put it on the shelf.

I've come to the conclusion that I just don't like steel handles, and probably never will. I'd try one in FRN, G-10, carbon fiber, jigged bone, or about anything else though.

I think skeltonized liners & frn ,like the Endura 4 & delica 4 would be awsome on the lava.
Just my opinion!

I agree completely. The FRN might also bring the price down to where I can afford it.

I know what you mean... As much as I love Spyderco designs, I personally can't stand SS handles -- must be the shape of my fat paw. :o

My fave Spydie of all time in terms of blade shape and overall ergos is the Scorpious, but the SS scales were too slippery and too thin for me to use comfortably. I'd love to own that bad boy in G10 or FRN (without paying through the nose for a custom job...). And, yes, an FRN or G10 Lava would be great -- I love the Spyderco "little big knives" like the Meerkat and the Salsa.

The stainless handles are about the only thing that's keeping me from buying a Lava. I love the looks of it and I'll probably eventually end up with one anyhow, but the stainless handle puts it a little lower on my list than it would be with FRN or G-10.

I disagree, the SS handles seem nicer to me. I've edc'd a few FRN knives(Delica 1, and a REscue), but it just feels, looks cheaper, although I know it very tough, as we all know, but I just cannot get past my original feeling when holding a frn spyder.

its a really nice knife despite the steel handles. its small, but hefty and built for its size. the awesome design of this knife makes the slippery handles a bit better to deal with, but yeah an frn version would be awesome.

I like the lava also, but for a knife that size, the blade should be upswept like the mouse for more cutting edge!

SS is an excellent material for makiing a new concept. (the dropped blade on the Lava has some tricky lock work). SS is difficult to do well, all flaws show up, so it's a good "test bed". There are no "other materials" problems to deal with. SS offers a strong cosntruction with a good format for clip screws. Focus can be on design. Engraving becomes an option with SS.

If a model is going to go to an FRN version, expected sales must be fairly decent to cover the high cost of FRN tooling. Making linered versions with G-10 or Carbon Fiber would raise the already high cost.

Sales are acceptable on the Lava, and we're keeping it in the line-up for '08, but I wouldn't say they were high enough, at this time, to warrant FRN tooling.

Part of the reason for tyring the Lava design, which was fairly radical at the time was Chad's assistance and exuberance on our forums. He also promoted the model on many other forums. Production of his design was kind of a "thank you" for his support.

When Chad's Boker designs were released, at $30 retail, it kinda took the cream off the top of Lava sales.

Glad to hear that it's going to be sticking around. As I said, it's on my want list, just not at the top. Maybe when I get around to buying one my purchase will be the one that pushes sales over the edge to warent a FRN version! ;)

No change in the future... sadness.

Grippy lighter handle would make my day, then make another version with a Dodo style blade so I could buy two of them.

out of curiosity, how many paid pre-orders would be necessary to cover enough of the cost to actually go through with it?

I seem to recall Sal saying that a new FRN mold will run from $30,000 to $50,000, which is why the Salts are using the old E3/D3 molds. Even 30 grand is a lot of Lavas.

Focus can be on design.

after using the lava more, i quickly realized that the design of this blade was so good that the design totally makes up for the slipperyness of SS handles. the fit is so perfect in my hand. i like the native, and the lava is held like the native is, but the lavas design feels WAY better even with the SS inmop.

This post drives me nuts, I don't agree with Sal (sorry Sal). Every single post on the Lava talks about the stainless steel handle being the biggest problem with the Lava. Even the people that like the knife say "It's good EVEN THOUGH the handle is stainless steel". Lots of people have said the stainless steel handle was the reason they didn't buy the knife. I think this is a great little big knife that could have some real longevity sales wise with new handle ( and maybe a Dodo style blade option).

i only buy black frn spydercos, except for a couple black g10 ones i have. thats what i prefer. and i still absolutely love the lava. if you are looking for a good spyderco and dont really have anything in particular this one may be a good option. i really like it. the grip is solid cause its designed so well.

I know the Lava is very popular, but I just don't like it. Doesn't matter the handle material. I prefer the Cricket, micro Dyad, or Spin for little big knives.

It is a shame that the cost of FRN is so high. Would love to see more Spyderco FRN knives in the line up. Or perhaps just more colors?
