Frog Skin?

I've never worked with stingray, always wanted too. Its got the rep of being very difficult to sew though. Tried to get a friend to make some bucking rolls for my saddle out of it but she flat out wouldn't. Spent quite a bit of time later in Glasgow. Had a girlfriend in Jordanhill. There was this Indian restaurant by the University that had curried salmon. Never had it before and havn't since but I can still remeber how good that was even 37 years later.

If you fancy using stingray I would definitely recommend using the polished finish that has a lot less bone strcuture to go through than its unpolished variant. I've bought the one below from Pelgio in Thailand and I'm pretty happy with what I got:

and salmon curry sounds delicious! I'll give that a go sometime. My personal favourite is the mussel pot from 'mussel inn' in Edinburgh :) Its owned by a Mussel farmer so you get lots of fresh mussels really cheap.

Thanks for the recommendation. I didn't know if I should buy polished or not. Is that Row Stingray?

You ever looked at chicken leg leather? Really cool stuff. Looks like dinosaur hide, or what I'd assume it would look like. :)

I just checked their website and it said Cowtail stingray. Its this one:

The unpolished one has its charm too but I've heard that its much more of an unpredictable hide to work on (I've owned a non polished stingray item but I haven't used them before). Using a diamond chisel I was able to cut a well defined hole through the polished hide so I think it wouldn't be too troublesome if threaded by hand.

I've heard of chicken leg leather but have yet to see one. I would love to try it when I have a chance. Is ostrich leg leather just a bigger version of that? In either case if it looks like dinosaur skin I may use it just before Jurassic World comes out next year! :P

Here's the design of the sheath that I am planning to make using frog skin. :) May I have your opinion on this? Its my first sheath so sorry if its really bad.

I'm a bit on the fence of using only frog skin for this one. I am tempted to use ray skin for the flower part but I'm not sure if the colour of frog skin would overpower the crest...

It is similar in look to ostrich, yes, but it looks more reptilian to me. Pretty stuff.

I'll leave the inlay stuff to those with more experience. Do you plan to stitch the thin lines of the interior of the flower? Not sure if that matters or not. I really like the design though. Really looking forward to what you come up with.

Edit- just looked at the link. Looks like decent prices. :)

I really have to try chicken leg skin now :D

I remember being surprised when my Anglo-Chinese ex-girlfriend ordered chicken feet at a restaurant! I think its time for me to dwell with them once again :)

and thank you for liking the design :) hopefully I could make it soon but I am trying to get some ivory frog skin as well so I can use it on this and the next sheath.

I think I would just leave the inner parts of the flower as its being radially supported but I will need to have a rethink once I glued them on.

Yeah people in Thailand eat rays so the skin is basically a by-product so the price is pretty fair :) If you do decide to use ray skin I would definitely recommend the smaller rayskins for knife sheath making as you will only be able to get one 'pearl' (also known as the stingray heart), the biggest bead in the middle per ray.

Thanks for your kind words everyone its really nice of you all. :)
