It still gets a butt cap, but you get the idea.

The knife is well balanced and smooth to handle.

Thanks for the input, pro or con. It helps to get more than one opinion,

especially on a new design.

The handle was time consuming to construct, I will know what to expect

next time and it will, no doubt, go smoother.

This is a 12 1/4 inch knife. The blade is W2, triple normalized, PBC and clay coated, quenched in Tough Quench.

The two piece guard was forged from wrought iron then torch blued. The black ferule is buff horn. The white material is ivory.

The handle itself is Calif. buckeye burl.

I don't known about the butt cap.
Thanks for looking, Fred

really nice. really really nice.

With the ring hilt like that, though, would it might work better with a increase of 5-10 degrees in drop at the rear of the handle? Then again, haven't seen the butt cap yet.

I was thinking the same thing as Koyote.??? Hard to tell from just a picture though. How does it feel in your hand? Please send it my way for some LENGTHY inspection!:D Very nice!

Some one told me, years ago, " knives are not made with straight lines "

I thought they meant, " knives are made of curves " So for a few years, all my knives were curved. No matter what the design. My bowies looked like the hunters , I made. I finally figured out, that; "knife design" is about the cutting edges position, relative to the hand that holds it. How the edge approaches its intended target. Its different for different knives.
In a fighter, I want the cutting edge, from tip to guard, to be both, below
and parallel to the knuckles in the gripping hand. I want to be able to thrust the point forward, or cut with the long edge. The early fighters, that I made, presented the point, basically because, the knife curved from
tip to butt cap, making the tip move downwards, where it is least effective. Now when I build a fighter, I make the handle rise slightly, so the entire cutting edge moves below the knuckles. At the same time, I try to maintain the overall flow of the knife.
This approach may not produce , an accepted look, but for the mechanics involved, the results, I believe, speak for themselves.

I do believe you will see a change, to the eye anyway, in the way the knife looks,
when the butt cap is attached.

Thanks for your input. Hope this helps you to understand my approach, Fred

OMG Fred  That is a Beautiful piece of work ! After your description an obviously well thought out design too ! World Class !!

Was it tough to get the front guard to mate up with the sub-hilt pin ? Wow, I keep going back for looks. It really is a great looking fighter Fred !!

David,

It was almost laughable, getting the pin in the hole:rolleyes:. I traced a couple of copies of the guard, while it was still flat; prior to the bend. I used one to arrive at the hole drilling spot in the lower arm of the guard. Drilling before bending made since at the time. Mistake! I had one less option. I had to go to the hole. I used one copy with the hole drilled in it, to make the bend and see were the hole, ended up relative to the hangy down part of the guard. I kept the OA torch going for half hour.

I worked both pieces at the same time to get them to come together like they did.
I am planning on some, fancy work, at the junction, along the bottom of the guard.
Thanks for your input, I'm pleased you like it, Fred

Not bad for a Ole Fart????? HEHEHEHEHE!!! Me like.  :D ;)
Did you survive the hammerin? The pics that were posted looked like there was some steel being transformed into cutting instruments. I didn't see you for a few days, thought you might be a little weak??:barf: :jerkit:.
