first of all I would like to say a huge ty to BLADSMTH FOR taking the time to type up the article, on how to make a knife from a file.

from that article I have almost finished my first knife from a old file that I had laying around. I couldn't resist I sharpened it before putting a handle on it. it is razor sharp tho and seems to hold a edge fairly well. its going to turn out much better than I expected.

a quick question that I cant find the answer to. does anyone know how to make a guide so that I get a constant bevel using my belt sander. I have a small 1in belt sander with a small work area around the belt.

Arron Gough has a youtube video showing how to make a jig. But I would suggest (as many others suggested to me, including Bladsmith) to file the bevel up to your desired size freehand and then draw file it flat. Here is Arron's youtube link http://youtu.be/r9iNDRwwBQQ

I built one of these jigs yesterday and it works great. But I enjoy filing by hand as well

Jigs don't have to be complicated. I had tried to make an adjustable jig using aluminum angle and hinges but just couldn't get one to work that didn't have a lot of "slop". It dawned on me I was over complicating things.

Here is one I made in about 5 minutes on the table saw. Just rip the front to whatever angle you desire.
