It's time again to try and get the great folks on Shop Talk to update their profile info.

All too many of you have cute locations, occupations, etc. This isn't the way to get help and be a part of a real community.

If you live in Alberta, Canada...or Miami, Florida....or Los Angeles, CA...say so. It may let a fellow maker know that you are near and he may offer some materials or help you need. Putting things like, "Neverland" and such will make you look like a kid.

If you are a full time knife maker, say so. But if you just started to learn to make knives, don't list your occupation as "Knifemaker" and call it "Bob's Knifeworks". If a student, say so, we all were students , and are extra willing to help those who still are.

Putting your age in the info will help a lot. I understand some folks are sensitive about their age, but most of us aren't that way.

I know that there must be two or three REAL black opps and/or CIA guys on this forum, but I bet they have better ways of shielding their location and occupation than silly info.

So guys, take a look at your profile and edit it if it needs updating.

Final comment:
Knifemaking is a REAL skill and art.
Helping others learn that skill and art is what BF and Shop talk is all about.
It is only with REAL info we can be on a fair footing and deal with each other in a REAL way.

Thanks, The Moderator

Well, while we're at it...

For those who have made it a point to hang around here, it would sure be helpful if you enabled some form of offline communication (e-mail or PM). Granted, you have to be a paying member to get PMs, so all you freebie Registered Users can't go there, but I think you ought to be able to receive e-mails. I know, I know... we're all worried about yet another source for pointless SPAM, but I will say that since adding my e-mail contact information to this forum, I have seen absolutely NO increase in unwanted e-mails. Now that may be mute testimony to how unpopular I am, but either way, I'd say you're safe adding that offline communication option here.

That would certainly make it easier for folks like me to contact you about things like free supplies and such... if you're interested in free stuff.

I'm with Greg. It is so much easier to communicate if we don't have to jump through hoops to talk to you.

I agree also. I have not had any additional spams from having my information readily available. As the Geek can attest, having your real info and location can result in an invite to a hammer-in or shop. Stacy and I both have been known to send out materials for new makers. I will not however send any to neverland nor do I normally respond to questions from these places.

Chuck echos my sentiments. I regularly just hit the back button instead of offering to send someone free material.

Thanks for the reminder, Stacy. I just updated my profile, sig-line and status.

I'm updated and I really appreciate all you guys on here I don't post much but I spend a heck of alot of time browsing and searching through the vast info that has been shared. Heck if anybody on here is close to me (new location comes in to play) I would love to chat and get some tips.

Updated my profile. Not that anyone ever contacts me. LOL. Bladsmth, it is a great idea to update periodically. Thanks for the reminder.

Don,

That is the kind of thing we need to keep updated. Good on you. I have attempted to contact some that did not have PM access and no email. That and sometimes they did not even have a real name or location. I was going to offer free assistance/materials and they lost out. I normally do not post these offers on the open forum. I have once in a while but not often.

If you have signature capabilities, seeing your info upfront doesn't hurt either
