Since I've been hanging around Uncle Henry's group for a while, I've come to greatly respect the depth of knowledge around here.

So, here's a new twist. I found this Frontier stockman in my dad's stuff. I've never heard of Frontier, so if any of you folks have any info, it would be appreciated. I never saw dad carry this one, so I'm guessing that he just picked it up somewhere and threw it in a drawer. As you can see, it's a little on the rough side.

Measurements are: 3 1/4 closed, 2 1/4 clip, 1 3/4 spey, 1 3/4 sheepsfoot.

Even though it appears to have had hard life, the little devil is razor sharp.

Check this thread Researchin Imperial Schrades, I just posted some pics of the frontier line. This was a good line of knives ( quite similar in many patterns ) to Schrade. Made in the 80tys. with a powder horn shield. We have done some info on these ( archives ) however perhapes Phil would like to further elucidate on these. LT

I am a recent convert to sing the praises of Frontier. I have one that belonged to my Grandfather, but always thought it was just a cheap knife that Imperial had. A few months ago I picked up a single blade for $3 at a pawn shop. The blade was about 50-60% used so I sharpened it to see how good it was. To my surprise it is now one of my favorites. I have since bought several including a stockman with carbon steel blades. It has become one of my favorite knives.
Research the threads and you will find a plethora of info about them. They are great knives and excellent users! :D

Here is an old ad that was in a file I was accessing for another reason I thought you might like to see it.

LT,

Could you please use some smaller words for us buckeroos here in AZ. That e-loose-ive-dating one went right past us here in the hot sun. Phil probably got it, however.
We do like it when you have time to post pitchers...aint NOBODY got the goods like you do. That is very cool.

How is the display/exhibit going?

Sometimes late at night my spelling is even further ( more than normal ) adversly affected by the ingestion of various foods but mostly beverages. Thankyou for asking about the exhibit. The big question will be where do I put all this stuff when it ( the exhibit is over) All the space that these used to use is now filled in with more junk ( er stuff ) that I have gotten in the last couple of months. I am now contemplating a new building. LT

No grovel... Just straight out and asked! :)
Gotta be quick. Had a nice little nap and thought I could look in here before crashing for the night.

Ted,
Looks like a model 4132 square bolster, serpentine stockman, if the color is what Imperial called 'Ol Ivory'. If the color is off on my monitor, and it is 'Sundown Yellow', then the number is 4133. It sold for $7.95 during most of it's run. Fine carbon steel blades.

Fine knives, as all here know, my favorites.

Here is an ad from a 1978 issue of Field and Stream.
The cover of the October 1981 issue of 'American Blade' magazine.
A catalog opened to the page showing your knife, Ted.

And a mystery Frontier. Or is it a Schrade? It's a 4" closed same as the 8OT, but has the Scrimshaw of the bass and the Scrimshaw logo on the blade. But the blade also has the Frontier tang stamp-- no mention of Schrade, and it has the reverse Frontier stamp of 4435, Imperial, USA, Stainless. The digit '5' at the end of the model number denotes a 'double eagle' knife, with stainless steel blades and wood handles. So how did this knife come about?

Debbie Chase thought it was probably a repair job done by Schrade for a knife sent back for fixing.

I have learned that just like with Schrades, anything is possible with these.

Thanks for humoring me and putting up with my fixation on these things.

Phil,
I love the stockman with the bass. Nice knife and a real puzzler. If I saw it in a case from a distance I would have bet money it was a Schrade from the blade etch and the scrim.

I got a 4431 a while back & I love the carbon steel blades, but they are a little loose. Any suggestions on how to tighten them?

Thanks,
Dale

TP you have been around long enough to know these are what Schrade product hunting is all about. Well done LT

Tex,

Great job. You have solved the mystery. Thank you. And, yes, the scales are Ivory, not Yellow. It is indeed pictured in the ad that you presented.

One suspicion that has been cleared up for me is that Frontier is in fact related to the Schrade legacy through Imperial.

The blades on this little guy just explodes into sharpness when you pass them across a Hard Arkansas stone. Now, I realize that if they come to life that quickly, the edge might deteriorate quickly as well. But it is indeed a pleasure to put to a stone.
