Frozen Patties/Pocket knife (warning: a little gross)

love mine to death!

Just the title of the thread started bringing back memories. I was doing pretty much the same thing, trying to slide my Spyderco Military between a couple of tuna steaks and pry them apart. Well, the knife went completely through, and hit my right pinky finger. I immediately lost feeling in the finger, and for a second thought I had cut the tip off. When I finally opened my other hand up to take a look, I saw that I had just sliced down to the bone. Got stitched up, and a few months later I had full movement again. 4 years later, I still have a numb feeling in part of my pinky, and if I happen to hit it just right, my whole finger goes numb.

Yep. I learned my lesson.

From the point of the cut to the tip of my finger, but just on the right side, is numb. I doubt I'll ever get feeling in it again. There a slight knot raised up at the cut, I figure that's were it glances off of the bone.

Dude?! That went through your hand? I would freak out.

About an 1/32" -1/8" of the tip came out the other side.

I refrained from freaking out until I was for sure that I didn't cut my whole finger off, then I was ok. My wife on the other hand, did this cute little, "oh no what do we do" shuffle around the kitchen. She wouldn't make a very good nurse.

Thanks for all the well wishes all, it's healing up pretty good. I have about 80% range of motion and I figure I'll get the rest back once the swelling goes down. A friend mention using some Mineral Ice on the swollen area to help reduce the swelling faster. It seems to work. Something about opening up the blood vessels so that the hold blood can be moved out quicker.

You will get feeling back again. I severed my index finger on my middle knuckle about 70% through (it was dangling).

Went to the emergency room on that one. Sewed it up, and the finger is functional again. Nerves will mend over time if they are within connective distance.

I've never tried splitting patties with my knife, I generally bang them on something till them pop apart.... It sounds like a really bad idea though.

Contrary to popular beliefs, neurons do "regrow". The part of the cell that is severed will die, but the sensory cell itself is located all the way in the spinal cord, so it'll survive. The nerve will then slowly start growing out from the point it was severed at a rate of a couple centimeters per month. If the connective tissue sheath that the nerve was encased in, was not badly damaged, and doesn't shift in a way that blocks the nerve from growing back into it (that's where hand surgeons come in on serious wounds), then it'll grow back into the sheath, and be guided back. Over several months you'll then get the sensation back. Obviously this works much better with sharp cuts than with jagged ripping cuts.

The same logic doesn't apply to severing the nerve much higher up the limb, because it has trouble finding its way back to where it needs to be.

OMG, Thats Horrible!!!! Puncture wounds are bad. I cut my thumb off with Shun Kitchen knife when My wife came up behind me and scared me. It went in right below the nail and cut on a perfect angle. it was squirting blood with every heart beat. I have access to quick clot. There where all these little fibers I guess you could say they looked like. Nerve endings they where. But it healed rather quickly after being sewn back on. I put the tip in Ice and went to The Emergency room. (Still looks weird cuz of bone gone and is extremely sensitive a year and a half later, I have to tape it up everyday, whenever I leave the house) What I'm surprised about is, I was just cutting veggies with no force and it took my thumb off. Imagine a Strong angry man. Thats why Police shoot people waving knives around. And the argument that a knife is no good for SD is completely Bunk.
And I have only seen and had PE Waved endura, I want that SE!!!!!

PS. Hope it heals well, Gods speed:)
