Does anyone have thoughts on people who commit to buy your knife and say “I will take it” then never respond afterwords. Is there anything that can be done about people like this? Opinions, thoughts

Can’t say I’ve ever had this happen. I know some sellers make a point to say that they have the right to refuse a sale. Everyone here started with zero feedback, so in order to increase feedback score, buyers and sellers both had to take a chance on the new guy… a lot of the knife exchange operates on the honor system. I’ve even had guys send me a check in the mail. 99.9% of people here are no issue.

If there's a pattern of behavior we might be able to do something...but if it's a one off...it's just an aggravation that you have to deal with.

That said, if the guy ghosted you after committing in writing, I'd make a "Feedback" post and name him so other sellers can be aware.

There's no excuse for failure to communicate in either direction.

I've issued a warning to the member who did not honor his commitment.

Hate to be that guy who complains but don’t make a commitment unless you are 100% going to purchase. Appreciate everyone’s time and advise, enjoy rest of your weekend.

That's a pretty tight timeline you're running. People go out to dinner or see a movie or do some shopping...a few hours or maybe next day does not seem excessive to me.

The BF Rules for buyers stipulate:

3. Be prompt with your payment. The seller has the right to determine how they want payment and if they will work with you.

But it does not specify "x minutes/hours".

If you've gotten burned, there's always

I disagree.

If a guy has time to say he'll take it...he should have time enough to contact the seller and say I'll be away from the keyboard for such and such amount of time but I'm good for it...or something to that effect. Once you commit, it's incumbent on you to communicate in short order.

It doesn't take long to send PayPal, and it doesn't take long to communicate past "I'll take it".

As one who prides himself on clear communication, I have little sympathy for members who make commitments without following up. Whether sellers or buyers.

Things have been heading south around here in regard to too many folks trying to game the system or ignore its rules. Consequences will follow.

I get it that’s why I said I understand a short delay. I don’t feel that two hours is a tight time line. 30 minutes maybe an hour but in my humble opinion I feel over two hours is to long. If you are going out somewhere communicate that when you make a commitment to buy,I will take it but I’m out right now will send funds when home. If I buy, trade or otherwise I respond within minutes. I don’t leave people hanging. Especially if an when multiple people are interested and the first person who says I take it get it, but make you wait two hours and in the interim other buyers move on, now you lost potential sale from other buyers who purchased something else. End of the day COMMUNICATION is key

^ This

If a member posts a commitment to buy in 1 of my sales thread's without the common courtesy of any follow up communication within a REASONABLE time frame, then we're done as far as I'm concerned. 1 hour is being way more than generous IMO and then I'm moving on.
I don't have time for lackadaisical, inconsiderate people.

Fair enough - the communcation should have been there.

I deal with strict deadlines in my job (30 years now) and in private life I've adopted a more relaxed stance.

Also, wasn't aware of an ongoing problem in that regard. Gotta run a tight ship!

What if he had to rush his kid to a doctor or had some other emergency?

Then buying a knife would be absolutely meaningless and we would sort out any of the b.s. in the aftermath. How hard do you think it is to remove a warning or to update a thread with relevant info? Please.

Nobody here in their right mind thinks that getting that special knife, or selling one, is a life and death matter.

On the other hand, absent exigent circumstances, there is no excuse for failing to communicate with the seller that "I'll be in touch in x minutes or hours"...even within the same sentence with which the commitment to buy was made.

If we are going to forgo common courtesies, then the seller should just ignore any offer to buy from anyone who is not prompt, and simply sell to the first person who is willing to send payment following the original post.

I grew up in a time in the world where a man's word was his bond. Nowadays, apparently, not so much.
