The nice man in the brown truck brought me a new knife yesterday (by the way, my thanks to Patrick and TripleAughtDesign for outstanding service). This is a good thing.

The knife in question was less than shaving sharp out of the box. No big deal -- after all, I'm going to sharpen the knife many times over the years, so what's one more time. Besides, I enjoy sharpening my knives.

No, the frustrating part is that I didn't have time to sharpen it properly last night. Now, my new knife is at home, still less than shaving sharp, and I'm at work. What kind of person am I, to leave that poor thing sitting there among strangers (my other knives) without a decent edge? Please tell me that dullness isn't contagious. Will I have to resharpen all my other knives when I get home?

I don't know about dullness being contagious, but keeping things SHARP is very addictive. I am a compulsive sharpener. I keep a Spyderco ceramic file set on my desk just to touch up edges on my daily carry knives and my customs while I sit here waiting for web pages to load up. I feel your pain, brother.

I AM SURE that your supervisor would understand why you just Had to be late if you explained it to him. Supervisors are Always very understanding about personal addictions getting in the way of work

Besides, iron particles in your blood are not usually part of standard bodily fluid screens for illicit substances that can compromise work performance.

What I don't understand is how you could Go to Sleep with a dull knife?

BTW: I just Hate new knives with lousy edges. Of course, I thought the much touted Spyderco, Kershaw, Benchmade edges ALL needed a little improvement Out of the Box.

You sir,are an unfit mother! The only solution is for you to place all your knives into protective custody.Mine!I will take proper care of them.

True Brother, last night I got hold of a second hand Vanguard from Buck and it was so dull that you could rub your finger over the edge for as long as you wished.
The crazy thing was that it took me well over 90 minutes (Yes one and a half hour +) to get a hair popping edge on it. I started with the EXTRA course diamondhone from my Lansky 4 diamond set and ended with some lapping compaound on my grandfathers leather razor lapping "belt".
I can't understand this as I readily rebevel resharpen BM ATS34 blades in a very short time.
It just looks as if the Vanguard's steel is very tuff. Years ago I had the same problem with a Buck XLti folder it also took extremely long to sharpen it.
On the other hand that XLti stayed sharp during many a scouting weekend.

Kelt34, I dunno. Nobody in the White House seems too sharp. But things there have been Anything but dull. But dullness is not restricted to government property. Dullness just happens. It's just one of those sorry facts of life that we all have to live with. It's knowing when things are dull and Doing something about it that counts.

I just got a Spydie 204 Sharpmaker today, and all is sharp at my place now. The Video that came with it was great! Right now I am looking at every object with even the slightest hint of a sharp edge on it that needs a sharpening. fast, easy, and good edges from that sharpmaker!

Right now I am looking at every object with even the slightest hint of a sharp edge on it that needs a sharpening....

Too funny, I thought I was the only one who used to look for stuff just to sharpen.

I am not sure if "dullness" is contagious, but I do know that I am now taking inventory and trying to determine which one of my "babies" needs a touch up.
