This is a rare Emerson, a description I try not to use without justification. It is a handmade Commander: satin blade, deep swedges, SpecWar logo, small version Wave, correct recurve without the machine 'hitch' in the belly. The handles are thick G-10, nearly covering the domed pivot, that are hand-contoured! Lock up is rock solid and early, and the action is silky smooth. Blade is perfectly centered. It is my estimate that it was made in 1998, but unlike virtually every other version, it is NOT dated.
This knife has been carried and used - its been tapped for both side tip up clip (work done by Ernie), and may have gotten some spa treatment from him at that time. Overall condition is excellent, but there are a few telltale scuffs on the razor sharp blade.
There are a few features that makes this so rare: one is that it is a genuine double ground bladed knife - it does not feature the "dual ground chisel" that first appeared on the Commander. Another is that it is not one of the PPP Commanders, ie, pre-production prototype knives, because its sporting a custom handle. Another is that although obviously made very early in the Commander lifespan (Wave size, handle thickness, swedges, etc), there's no date just like the pre-factory knives of the era. I would be very surprised to see another like it anywhere.
Its not mint, but the asking price is $oldfor it.
