i have been advising a couple of new busse prospects on the right knife for a survival, bugout, hurricane kind of blade.

so if you had your choice, taking in to account all the right things, portability, weight, toughness, you know, all the important stuff.
what would be your choice and your two or three most important reasons for making that knife your choice.

heck, even include two of your busse's if you want, list them most critical to have first and backup second.

right off the bat i think i would pick the Ergo Outlaw as my first choice followed by the Fusion Jack second.

i like to have a lil of everything with me so i need to pick a blade that will also allow room for my pistol, lights, rope, beer and other things in my pack. i am not a knife fighter as i'm afraid of being cut, that's why i drink and carry a 1911 ;)

these two blades for me are the right balance between having it on my person vrs. performance.

i'll add more later but help me here by giving your input.

I would say an SH first, and then a Badger as a back up or maybe a mean streat.

I want heft and strength.

$hit, you want heft and strength, drink redbull and johnny blue, you'll need it to carry your 64lb FSH with you. christ man, are you going to take a handtruck to haul all your knives and beer????  ;)

PS: send me your badger

FSH for the workin details along with a Meaner Street for speed. I don't own a SFNO but it looks like it could handle both details of the other two knives. So if I had one and only planned on carring one it would have to be a SFNO.

Stay Strong & No Regrets!

If we are talking a post hurricane blade the SH or BM would be preferred because realistically you need a tool that you can pry, chop and dig with to clear debris. I would not be packing them on foot anywhere other than to the job site. For my "your stuck in the woods blade (swamp) after dark" I would prefer the smaller SNFO or SJ due to their lighter weight and ability to handle all the camp chores. As for a realistic survival scenario, that's Soldier of Fiction magazine stuff in this concrete jungle around here. I'm sure it would be different elsewhere, but we have managed to build condos on anything above sea level.

Well, I want to be able to cover as much of what I'd run into.

For that reason, first choice, my SHSHII (cause I love it), then the SFNO or the FSH. These larger bladed knives will allow me to chop up or through almost anything.

Then, a smaller blade. MS or MrS would be the smallest I'd go (well, maybe a Lean or Leaner). The Badgers, either the original SH, or the BA3, would make great choices as well. Something this size would provide dexterity when gathering food, dressing game, or making a fireboard, as well as defense.

The Active Duty would be a good hide out blade with the right rig.

Just my $.02

good choices, i forgot about the shshII, and you are right about a small "food / splinter" knife. that AD is just an awesome lil blade isn't it

LOL, as James Bowie once said, A knife never runs out of bullits.

I would take a SFNO and a HOG FSH, the SFNO would make a great light utility knife and if need be a good chopper. The HOG FSH is massive and would be heavy if carried for extended periods but it would prove to be a very useful blade in the described situations.

If going light is your goal (light hike etc.) then I would take the SFNO hands down but if I was going away for anything that may get ugly, I WOULD TAKE BOTH! :D The SFNO would fit on a LBV I think and a HOG FSH attached to the pack or on the thigh.

I seem to remember that Mr. Bowie died fighting a vastly larger (not superior) force partially because the defenders ran out of shot.

I would use mys SFNO, lol the only large one I have, and then prolly the meaner street for small work.

I would pick sfNO. To me, this is the most practical size for almost any kind of survival. It can chop, pry, dig and cut like a razor. And, crush things with that pointy butt. My second choice would be steel heart E. Either one would get me out of tough situation.

yes, but he took several with him. The kife saved his skin in several duels as well. He should have died long before the Alamo. The knife saved him a few times.

Hmmmm ...Hurricane, funny you should mention that.

You really don't want to bug out DURING a hurricane unless your house blows away or the water is up to your neck. Otherwise, you just stay put and wait the storm out.

What I keep on my belt is the largest Busse I can get away with. That is a SHBA. Anything larger is the backup and goes into the BOB. This is along with my Officers ACP on the belt, perhaps 1 mag in the pocket. Weight is everything (high water), concealment is everything. Having light is everything also. I carry 2 ARC lights and a Elektrolumens 3W, 2AA flashlight This all goes on the belt or in the pockets. More flashlights in the BOB, (I worked nights for 15 yrs).

For me, for a hurricane, the top priority would be light, a stout knife then whatever other sort of weapon. This is of course in addition to food and water needs. The main thing is, it pretty much needs to fit on your belt and not weigh you down if the water is over your head. Remember, everyone else has just gone through the same pounding, so it's not like someone has much of an advantage over someone else. That comes later.

...A little bird helped me out with this one...the FNO it is. Skunk, yours is a beaut. They are all very impressive, but the 3rd one down has me all ho* and bothered.

very good choice for a gal needing a emergency kind of knife, the only thing better would be to have a mean street or active duty as it's companion.

i wish more of the gals would chime in and post here, it's interesting to see and hear how we all need and use our knives. my wife uses hers for digging, i cringe everytime i see her scraping away at the dirt to uncover rocks and crap (treasure) she wants to take home. :D
