Ok, how would one go about making a fuel oil (diesel) forge burner?
I don't have a blower but I could possibly (if I'm lucky) work something up.
I have very limited assets (think Iraq) and want to try and forge out some old M2 .50 caliber barrels which I and wondering if that would make for a good blade/knife steel?

Thanks,
Stefan

While a fuel oil forge is doable, it requires some forge and burner building experience. The use of a good blower is essential. The burner is basically the same as a oil fired boiler, with and open chamber. Do some searches on, "Waste Oil Forge", and "Waste Oil Burner", and you will see the many threads on such a build. This is not usually and entry level forge, and not one to scrimp on the parts and materials.

Forging M2 is not a simple process either. The HT for M2 is also complex.

Stefan, I can only imagine your situation there, but I would look for a vehicle heater/air conditioner blower to build your forge. I don't know what you'll find for refractories, but there should be some good high temp insulation on some of your equipment. Making blades from gun barrels would make a great story, but you may be better off with vehicle springs for a steel source.
There are some resources on the web that show their oil fired forges or casting furnaces. With a little thought and some experimentation you should be able to build a serviceable forge.
Good luck with your project. I think spending your free time on something like this is a great idea that will put your mind in a better place.
Have fun!

Hi,

I'm not positive, but most "ordinance" steel is a medium carbon steel. Like 1030 to 1045. Cheap, tough and and easy to machine. It is possible Ma Duce might get 4140 though. Though work hardening due to barrel flex and expansion might preclude it's use.

Stefan,
Don't forge those 50 barrels down!!!! Send them to me if they need a good home!:D;)
Use some car spings instead.

Stacy, He's not talking about M2 steel......he's talking about the M2HB .50BMG A.K.A the "Ma Duce" ....50 cal machine gun.

I realized that after I made the post. Still not an easy forging project.
