Full/Partial Tang question

nearly all the knives I make are a curved handle on a straight tang. No problems yet....

I'm making a butt plate for a chitlangi and I'm using a solid piece of brass and then stock-reducing it to get the curve. An extra ounce or two on the back end should help the balance. You can set it in place with pins, peened and ground flush.

Yes Dan, but how many of yours are serious choppers, large, heavy, used heavily? Most of your blades are small by khuk standards. I'd like to hear from a workman like Hollowdweller, or Yvsa, with one of your blades first. Perhaps there is no difference in power, vibration and feel. But like hitting a baseball on the right or sweet part of the bat, I am concern a curved tang in a straight handle might do something adverse.

It's funny now that I think about it....the one heavy-duty chopping knife I've made....is full tang. But not for strength reasons....for easy of completion. Full tang takes much of the guesswork out of handle making.

I have a Phillipine bolo that is full tang, but the tang is curved and not very wide at the end. I have chopped some pretty tough stuff with it without incident (so far) ;)

Took the pic but then my batteries went instantly dead. :( After they're charged up a bit I'll see if it indeed took and if so transfer it too my computer and post it.:D

If not I'll take it again and do the same, damned electronic battery needing bastids anyway!!!!:grumpy: ;)

Well it took for what it's worth. As you see I managed to transfer it before the batteries went dead again. I was in a hurry and only partially charged them. I'll try for a better pic when the batteries are fully charged.

Wow! nice handle!

Hollow- curved handle on straight tang? No.

Dan- all this is interesting because the design of the khuk is supposed to be well thought out over hundreds of years. Yvsa likes the normal tang, feeling the vibration is easier on the hand.

Anyway, the Kamis in the past when they made curved handles had slightly curved tangs, right? ( no, I'm not going to take my hanshee apart to find out!! )

the tangs on all the H.I. khuks that I have disassembled were all curved.

should also add that the 3 "old" khuks I have worked on all had curved tangs as well.

Many of our handles are straight- or straighter than khuks in the past with gently curved handles. How could the butt cap with the tang in the middle be centered in each if they were the same tang?

Answer- some tangs are more curved than others.
