Full sized tool every day?

Yep, as much as I like multitools, they are just a stopgap item, in case I'm away from my dedicated tools. That said daily companions are a Vic Swisstool X and a JetBeam Jet II in a Concealco leather pouch. Will be 5 years of carry in April.

I never really understood guys buying a new multi-tool to tote in the car or truck. Portability is not needed and it seems like it'd be a lot cheaper to just buy a pair of pliers and screwdrivers, etc. (or just pull some you already own from your tool box and stow them in the car). You could probably buy a good assortment of the basics at a flea market for a song.

Anyone serious about stowing tools for road emergencies knows all that. The real reason anyone buys a multi-tool for his* car is that he wants an excuse to buy one, and it's a way to justify the expense to his wife or self. Nothing wrong with that, as long as there are also dedicated tools available. You really don't want to use pliers on a nut if you can help it.

That said, there is a role in d&d auto mechanics for multi-tools. I have several times used one to get underway, but that was because it was on me, as always, when the regular tool kit was inaccessible. A multi-tool on your person beats a tool kit in your trunk with the lock frozen solid. Otherwise, you are much better off with the proper tools.

*It's always a guy.

I carry a fullsize Victorinox Swisstool everyday. I cant figure out why alot of people complain about the weight of some tools.

Does it pull your pants down?. If it does tighten your freakin belt:rolleyes:

Actually, this begs the question: If you were going to stock your car with just a few basic tools, which would you choose?

I have had the same emergency kit behind my truck seat for years. It's in an old army tool kit, the one thats about the size of a large shaving kit with a zipper on top. Inside is one medium adjustable wrench, a large channel lock pliers, medium flat screw driver, medium phiilips driver, set of open/box end wrenches in common sizes like 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 7/16, 9/16, 3/4, compact hacksaw, Gerber-Fiskars sliding blade wood saw. A flat mill file, and bottle of matches. A roll of black electrical tape, and a half role of duct tape.

I've made some real repairs with that kit.

I normally carry some kind of full sized pliers on me as if I don't I need them. I use them also for my paracord work. :)

I carry a leatherman PST tol every day, since they stoped making them, I have a back up just in case. I use it quite often actually, so it is definitely worth it

i rock my Charge Tti everyday with the pocket clip. having it on me gives me the confidence that i can tackle just about anything my day may decide to throw at me
