Ever since I started making knives, I have always wanted to make a full tang "tactical" tomahawk or axe. I am finally at a point where I can do so, and I thought I would share my progress so far.
Because of the size and complexity of the design, I will be having the blanks laser cut. The steel will be 3/8" 4140, a great choice for a tough use tool like an axe.
I am focusing on 2 designs to start. A large bearded axe that I am naming the "Skeg axe" and the small one I dubbed the "Peregrine".

Here are the drawings I made up.

The big ones are 16 x 8" , and the little guy is 11 x 5.25" .

Here are the prototypes I cut out of mild steel, I wanted to check the feel and balance before cutting the real thing.

I love the bearded axe with the spike. I'd buy one of those when you start making them. Please keep me informed.

humpf...I thought I already made a comment here, but I guess it didn't stick. Something along the line of looking forward to seeing how these finish out :)

Looks cool! I'm personally not a fan of the flat bottom on the axe, however. Other than that, this project looks like fun, and I'll be excited to watch.

Right now my neatly trimmed beard resembles the "Peregrine", however I'm seriously considering going all "Skeg axe" in an attempt to replicate the awesomeness of your larger design!

Great work, let's see the finished works ;)

would definately buy the bigger one with a spike on the end. not a fan when there is no pick axe side. in my opinion that is what takes a hatchet to a tactical axe. lightweight and throwable makes it a tomahwk.

Thanks for the comments guys!
I picked up the blanks from being laser cut today. Now I just need my huge box of belts for my grinder to get here, and then sparks will be flying! :D

Thanks man!

Here I am tapping the holes in the handles for the handle screws.

Cleaning up the profile on a Perigrine. Laser scale is a bear to grind off!

I was able to get a couple of them rough ground this evening. They will be getting a bevel on the top of the spike as well.

I was able to get some of the spikes ground in today.

Thanks man, I will be heat treating the first couple today. More pics soon!

I have the week off from my day job, so I was able to squeeze in some heat treating this morning!

Hot steel!!
