Well, I am exploring scandi grinds due to a customer request. You guys wish me luck. My grinder isnt the best set up to grind angles so I am somewhat limited. I think it will pull off a 20 degree grind so I am keeping my fingers crossed!!

how thick is that piece of metal in the photo that has been heat treated? Are all the holes to take weight off the knife or will actually have some aesthetic function? Great looking knives sir!

its 5/32" 0-1 barstock. The holes are for 1 but lanyard tube, there are 2 holes for the loveless bolts when the handles are put on, and the rest lighten the handle a tad and allow epoxy to pas between the tang area to both handle slabs.

set your platen at 20 and keep holding your knives at the 90 to grind (edge down )
i plan on when i can get the time /$ making a no weld and settig it at the 15 degree and using it just for sharpening

here is all I could get to today..........test piece. Think this angle will work? good old 20 degrees :)

If you have an angle of 20 degrees total (10 per side) and no secondary bevel, it should cut like MAD. 20 degrees per side (totallying of 40'), I have never tried that. I think the most I have ever done is 15' per side with a total of 30'. Now I do 12.5' a side and they cut like MAD too!

Brian, Maybe I call a Scandi Grind something other than what you are doing?
I grind a flat grind straight to the edge, and then strop a tiny secondary on it. It has to be very acute if you want it to reach the spine (or come near it). My triangle calculator says that a 1" blade ,flat ground to the edge ,will have a 7 degree total edge angle.

Looking good! you can figure out the grinds with some trigonometry, tan20=5/64 / x

anyone know how to get 10 degrees on the KMG? I can only go to 20 so I am dead in the water!

you can build a jig with a piece of 2 x 4 with a 10' slant cutout and then screw a piece of 2 inch wide steel on top of the cut slant and use it as a guide to grind the 10' grind and put a hole in the 2 x 4 and clamp it to your KMG's platen. only problem is, as you try to grind, the blade might get sucked into the jig! So the solution is to run the belt the other way going upwards! Course, then there is metal debris kinda running into your face, etc etc....

ahhh hell.....I am just going to flat grind the suckers the good ol' way:thumbup:;)

I'll save 1 blank for this zero grind idea later :) Makes my head hurt:p:D
